When your Lawyer Doesn’t Show Up, for your Murder Trial
June 10th, 2016 by iPhoneAllegedly, around midnight on the first Sunday night of 2016, Robert Mosher, age 22, was shot and killed by Demarcus Veasey, age 19.
Veasey was arrested, charged with first-degree murder, and remains in jail on those charges.
The trial was set for Tuesday Wednesday Thursday of this week.
Jim Morris, Veasey’s Little Rock defense attorney, was instructed to be in the courtroom at 8:30, Tuesday, for a private hearing between the judge and attorneys about recent motions, for court at 9 am.
8:30 passed, without Morris arriving. The court started at 9 AM, still without The defense attorney. Since Morris hadn’t contacted the court, Circuit Judge Bynum Gibson dismissed the jury, after roll call.
When Morris arrived at 9:08, he explained to the judge that he had to drop his daughter at a camp in Little Rock, before leaving. He added that he had tried to contact the court clerk, but didn’t get through, due to poor cell service, Judge Gibson, also an AT&T customer, didn’t seem to believe his excuse.
Judge Gibson commented, “I would have given you some lee-way, if you had called,” adding that 60-70 jurors had to be paid, and multiple witnesses will have to be reimbursed.
Gibson- “I’ve had defendants not show up, but never had attorneys show up after 9 o’clock. It’s killed 3 days of court time.”
Morris, was charged with willful contemptof court, responded, ” I merely made a bad decision, trying to be a good father.”
Judge Gibson replied, “I had considered 24 hours in jail, and a substantial fine of $4,000, payable to the clerk; but I’m not going to put you in jail.”
Morris responded, “I can’t afford $4,000. Now I’m upside down on this case,”and begin trying to negotiate with the judge, which did not go well.
Gibson – “You have shut down other trials, that could have taken place, today.
You could have found a way to communicate with this court. Your client didn’t even know where you were.”
The murder trial has been rescheduled for July 19, 20, & 21, while Veasey remains in jail.

Why is this news???? This is embarrassing to the people who paid for his services. But Monticello live don’t care about that…….
Response….
1. When a murder trial is postponed for a month for “bad judgement,’ it needs to be told.
2. 100 people were inconvienenced by him not making a phone call.
3. If you were to be his next client, you probably would want to know this.
4. If his client is facing a life-long prison sentence, being embarassed about his lawyer is not his main concern this month.
5. If his client is innocent, he gets to spend an extra month in jail, waiting for his trial.
Thanks, Joe Burgess
My favorite line was “Veasey’s Little Rock defense attorney”. Like Monticello doesn’t have a history of lawyers screwing up. It’s always the “out of towners” fault to a monticellonian. See things haven’t changed in Monticello, Ar.
Jury trial is serious business. I believe that the judge was correct in his reaction to the defense atty. being late.
You stated what the judge had “considered” doing, but not what the judge actually did for the defense atty.’s offense.
Good job Joe!
1. You pick and choose what “needs to be told”.
2. I know of other “bad judgement” issues going on in Monticello that’s never address on this site.
3. Yes being embarrassed should not be an issue for him but being portrayed as a joke which this article made him out to be is, if I did not know the involved parties this would be comical to me.
I may be “judgmental” because I have notice a trend to your site and how you pick and choice your stories. Some names or wrong, events that happened or wrong, even comments or edited for your favor. But all and all I do enjoy reading so “do what you do”……
I’m glad this was published this individual could have called numerous times AT&T works up and down the interstate I had that sevice. Thanks for letting the pepeople know not to hire this guy
Dear Mr.Joe I have noticed that people’s comments have to be reviewed by you before actually being posted and if your the press then I would think your an advocate of freedom of speech but with you process of filtering out comments that only you choose to be posted then clearly that’s not freedom your dictating which comments can be posted based on your own views and opinions which is not fair to the people of Monticello. Me being one of the younger generation I know that people also enjoy reading the comments of any article posted anywhere so your personal filtering process makes it not so desirable for any younger citizens of Monticello. It reminds me of China or north Korea where the higher officials can say what they please but if someone has something to say opposing what they say they filter their comments out and prevent their words from being Hurd so I would hope you’d take it into consideration to let the people of Monticello speak freely and let their voice and or opinions be Hurd instead off only people being Hurd of your choosing because I’m quite certain hundreds of people agree. If you don’t believe me post an article to have a vote on how many people would like to freely post comments and or have debates in the comments without your personal filtering process. Have a blessed day
Response: That sounds like a good idea. I ran it that way, in the beginning. But it goes downhill fast when someone announces that the man who lives on the corner is a child molester, because they don’t like them. Thanks. Joe B.
I can always depend on Monticello Live to keep me informed of local area news by objectively presenting the facts of current events in a timely fashion. I can experience the events as if I were actually there without being there. How one feels about or is embarrassed by the facts is their problem. Not the problem of the messenger. Atta Boy Joe, keep up the good work.
