Western Pines Drainage Project Underway
September 11th, 2024 by Joe BurgessAccording to Monticello Mayor Jason Akers, City crews began addressing drainage and infrastructure issues in the Western Pines neighborhood this week, beginning at the Western Pines Park.
The project was listed as a top 10 priority on the City Infrastructure Plan at a estimated cost of $374,000, but that amount will be saved as the Mayor has tasked the Streets and Drainage Department to repair the affected area. According to Mayor Akers, “We have the equipment and the people on staff who are qualified to complete this project. There’s no point spending taxpayer money to hire someone to do something we can do much cheaper ourselves”.
Ten Mile Creek, which runs alongside the neighborhood, has caused flooding issues for years in the neighborhood, largely due to overgrowth and dead trees. Culverts that allow the neighborhood storm water to drain were also found to be partially blocked and causing water backup, at times in to homes.
Monday, crews began working from the Western Pines Park, Northwards and then will work from the park Southward.
