Weevils drop home game to Southeastern Oklahoma

The University of Arkansas at Monticello was unable to mount an attack until late in the fourth quarter to counter a three-touchdown deficit, as the Weevils dropped a Great American Conference game to Southeastern Oklahoma State on Saturday, Sept. 22 at Cotton Boll Stadium.
Southeastern Oklahoma State capitalized on its second possession. Austin Skinner used his legs for an 11-yard gain to pick up a first down. Skinner followed with an 18-yard pass to Braxton Kincade to move into the red zone, setting up a 17-yard touchdown pass to Jaylen Sims. Joel Carlos’ extra point gave SOSU a 7-0 lead.
The SOSU Savage Storm recovered an on-side kick and moved into the red zone again, but the Weevils held them to a field goal try. Carlos’ 29-yard attempted missed wide right.
SOSU controlled the clock to open the second quarter before scoring on a 1-yard touchdown run by Rollin Kinsaul to make it 14-0. The score stood at halftime.
Midway through the third quarter, Arkansas-Monticello was pinned deep on a punt, starting at its own nine. Weevils’ QB Cole Sears’ third down pass was intercepted by Seu Luafatasaga, giving the Storm the ball at the UAM 22. However, Marsh Melancon stepped in three plays later to intercept Skinner at the 10 to thwart a scoring opportunity.
Southeastern Oklahoma relied on its special teams to help extend its lead to open the fourth quarter. After Sears was sacked for an 11-yard loss inside the 20, Luke Craddock blocked Josh Marini’s punt to give the Savage Storm first-and-goal. Ryan Taylor punched in a touchdown on the next play for a 21-0 lead.
It was the second-straight week the Weevils faced a 20-point deficit, but this time, UAM was unable to rally, despite answering with a touchdown on the next drive. Sears capped a seven-play, 75-yard drive with a 15-yard touchdown pass to Jeremy Hampton with 10:38 to play.
UAM marched down field again on its next possession, but came up short on a fourth-and-17 run inside the SOSU 20. The Weevils had one last chance, getting the ball back with 1:37 to play, but a Sears fumble at the Storm 42 was recovered by Southeastern Oklahoma’s Zac Scott to seal Southeastern Oklahoma’s win.
Arkansas-Monticello was held to 195 yards of offense, led by Sears’ 116 yards on 17-of-30 passing. He also added 24 yards on the ground.
The UAM defense was balanced with six players tying for a team-best three tackles and five players with two tackles.
Arkansas-Monticello (1-3, 1-3 GAC) will remain home Sept. 29 to host Harding University at 1 p.m.
