KARK Video – Weather Warning Woes & Wishes
February 27th, 2014 by iPhoneIn spite of Mayor Allen Maxwell’s Tuesday evening statement to the City Council, when asked if adding $11,000 to the cities expected expense in purchasing the tornado sirens, “We have discussed it, and tomorrow (Wednesday) there is a possibility that we will have a contract;” it seems no progress has been made in the standoff.
The issue even made KARK Channel 4, again last night.
Maxwell’s recommendation of adding $11,000 to the cities expected contribution of $32,000, for a total expense of $43,000, as approved by the city Council.
He also stated in that meeting, that the county would add $11,000 to their previously expected expense of $50,000, for a new total of $61,000, if approved.
Monday nights meeting with the City Council not include any mention of upkeep, maintenance, or how future expenses on the towers would be paid.
Drew County Judge Robert Akin, late Wednesday afternoon, told MLive that the updated total from the city’s action would be resented to the Quorum Court, Monday evening, as being one of three options for them to decide between, if they do vote to continue with the weather siren program.
The final decision on the weather warning tornado sirens is expected to be made by the quorum court in their Monday 7 PM meeting at the courthouse.
KARK-4 included the story and Monday’s meeting video, in their 10 PM State News, Wednesday night.

I think that if Monticello and all of Drew County get this system, then we should take the population of Drew County and divide it equally. I live in the county, and I may live in an area that will not be able to hear a siren. In that case I will be paying for something that is not benefiting me or my family. I don’t mind paying equally if everyone is paying the same, but I don’t think I should be penalized by having to pay alot more because I live in the county and not the city!
