VFW Teaches 4th Graders about Flag Retirement

May 16th, 2015 by

imageMembers of our local Veterans of Foreign Wars presented a program to MIS 4th graders, recently, with organizational assistance from DAR.

The students learned the meaning of the colors of the American Flag and the proper retirement (disposal) of an American flag that is worn and no longer in usable condition.

The white in the flag signifies purity and innocence;
Red, hardiness & valor; and
Blue signifies vigilance, perseverance & justice.

The thirteen stripes, representing the thirteen British Colonies were cut apart so it is no longer considered a flag.

The blue background containing fifty stars for fifty states remains in one piece. Each piece of the flag is saluted and placed in a fire to be consumed.

During the ceremony, a flag in good condition was displayed by Alivia Ramsey and Samone Lewis. The Pledge of Allegiance was repeated by all present and the ceremony ended with the bugler playing Taps.”

    The members of our local VFW and American Legion are always willing to give presentations on flag etiquette and to teach about the significance of our beautiful flag. Many people, especially our youth, think of the flag as just a symbol of our country. It is so, so much more. I wish every person would take time to learn the history of our flag and the significance of each part of it. It always amazes and saddens me when I see American citizens disrespect our flag and our country by stomping on and burning the flag. Thank you to all the men and women who have served this great nation, especially those who sacrificed their very lives to keep us free.
