Vandals Strike Local Parks Again and Again

June 21st, 2011 by

Vandalism has taken place in our local Monticello parks again over recent weeks, as shown by the photos above.

The top left shows (inside of the circles) where a loud speaker was taken from the ball field at Jordan Park. City workers discovered the speaker missing Monday morning when they arrived at work.

The top center pic shows where the “men” and “women” signs were removed from the new restrooms at McCloy Park, last week.

The bottom row of photos show where the pavilion at Lake Monticello’s table were “re-arranged” with litter scattered around the receptacles on both ends of the lake earlier this month.

I understand all the others except the trash ones. It looks as if they are quite full. True, they should have found somewhere else to empty or put their trash, but if the trash bins are full , then what’s the use of having them there. Maybe another few trash bins would go a long way.

  2. NAN CARTER says:

Yesterday afternoon, my grandson and I went to Lake Monticello so he could fish for awhile!! There was such a mess, I started to pick it up.. then I noticed a “dirty diaper” that somebody had left for a souvenier!! Trash was scattered over alot of the grass and it really upset me. We either more trash containers there, or they need to empty the ones we have there, more often.. The vandalism is so uncalled for!! We the taxpayers, buy those things for the use of the public.. not for some lamebrain to take for the sake of doing!! We need to catch the ones who are doing the vandalism and put a hefty fine on them as well as community service!

There’s a lot of things that go on around Monticello that are uncalled for.Enough said.

  4. Blondie says:

This vandalism, and criminal mischief is uncalled for but: I personally feel that there needs to be more offered to the teenagers in entertainment in this great area. Not all of them play ball, so other arts of entertainment must be offered, and monitored. Try to distract their minds with good fun. Driving up and down 425, and stopping in fast foods, is not all that needs to be offered to teenagers with no money to afford the entertainment of theater or bowling.

  5. Just Sayin says:

Looks like the trash needs to be emptied to me.

  6. Suggestion Man says:

I agree that there needs to be more entertainment in Monticello, and not just for the kids. It doesn’t matter what age you are, there are really only the two things to do: bowling and movies. Every once in a while, one of the churches will do something interesting for the community, but we need a more consistent solution. Since the problem at hand seems to be vandalism, why not use their desire against them? Put in a paintball course. Let them shoot at each other and take out their frustrations and violent tendencies that way. I understand that we have had a paintball course in the past, but it was outside of town and not advertised.

It might also be feasible to construct a skate park, which would be relatively inexpensive to build and maintain. Of course, some parents would be concerned for the safety of the children, but over protection leads to rebellion, such as the vandalism that we are now witnessing. Wearing knee pads and wrist braces could be a requirement for entering the skate park. Therefore, someone would need to be stationed there to enforce the rules, but this will create one more job that our town DESPERATELY needs.

I remember when I was in high school, kids would gather in Fred’s parking lot or in front of the old Wal-Mart store. Really? This is the type of entertainment that Monticello is providing its young people, empty parking lots? I see people complaining ALL THE TIME about the Splash Pad, but we need MORE of this type of thing.

  7. Stacy Cater says:

The kids don’t WANT anything to do.Most of them sit on their rears playing games, surfing the net,and watching tv.

  8. Dragonheart says:

Blondie, that is so true. Mischief comes from boredom. Boredom creates trouble. The trash however was most likely adults. I wish everyone had a little more pride in their community and kept better care of it. The park services should be by at least once a day if not more. The parks are our last bit of nature that is not destroyed by concrete and steel. See the trash pick it up, not photo it . Don’t make the Indian on the horse cry for you Monticello!
