March 20th, 2013 by Joe Burgess
Two men in a pick-up were stopped by a Chicot County deputy sheriff for speeding, last Tuesday. While approaching the vehicle, the deputy noticed the green copper wire in the back of their truck.
The Chicot County deputy contacted the Drew County Sheriff’s Dept., who contacted C&L electric. C&L confirmed there had been 7 power poles chopped down with an ax in the Four Mile Creek Road area, and approximately $8,000 of copper line was taken.
As the investigation progresses, Desha and Drew County Sheriff’s investigators also located more copper wire at a residence near McGehee, associated with one of the men. 350 pounds of wire was recovered from James Valentine, of McGehee, Jamie Wilhite, of Monticello (both in their early 30’s).
The men were arrested and their bond was set at $10,000 each by Circuit Judge Kenny Johnson.
Sheriff Mark Gober complimented the unified working relaitonship between the three counties, which led to the resolution of the case.
