More Details Released in Capital Murder Case from Friday Night
March 20th, 2014 by iPhoneOther testimony was presented by Arkansas State Police investigators during Monday’s first appearance hearing for Jonathan Woods, age 31 of Warren, who is charged for the capital murder shooting death of Samantha Poole, Friday night in Monticello.
Special Agent Matt Roberson testified that several witnesses saw the events that took place in and around Save-a-lot that night, March 14, around 7:20 pm,
He also described how the suspect, Jonathan Woods, and the deceased victim, SSamantha Poole were seen fighting inside the store, He told how she had gone into the store (by herself) a few minutes before Woods entered the store. Witnesses reported that the victim told Woods that she did not want to go with him, and how he then pulled her outside by her hair.
As testimony continued, it was told how Woods then fired a 380 caliber handgun in the store’s parking lot, forcing her to get in the car and drive away.
Police and sheriffs deputies arrived on Trotter Street, as the car pulled into that street, with city police behind the Cadillac, as Deputy James Slaughter pulled in front of the car, all with lights and sirens operating.
When the officer saw two muzzle flash gunshots, Deputy Slaughter fired 1 40 caliber shot, striking Woods under left armpit.
Police officers then swarmed the Cadillac, taking Woods down to the ground, and arresting him
Poole was pronounced deceased at DMH, shortly after arrival.
The Arkansas State crime lab determined that Ms. Poole died of 5 gunshot wounds, all from a 380 caliber.
Since the Deputy fired 1 40 caliber round, They determined that only wounds caused by Woods caused her death.
As of Wednesday afternoon, Woods remains hospitalized, and is being held without bond, following Judge Don Glover’s ruling, in Monday’s hearing.
The court appointed a public defender, Steven Porch, to represent him

1 Dead, 1 Injured in Officer-involved Shooting, Friday Night, near Save-a-lot
March 17, 2014
According to sources, around 7:40 PM Friday night, near the Save-a-lot food store, at the corner of North Hyatt and West Trotter, a domestic dispute led to shots being fired, which in turn led to an officer involved shooting.
Two individuals were injured and transported to Drew Memorial for treatment by SEEMS and MASI ambulance services. One was pronounced dead; the other was transferred north for further care.
A witness told MLive that the man and woman were both from the same vehicle, which was towed right before law enforcement left the area.
MLive has confirmed that the deceased victim was a female; the injured victim was male; and both were not from Monticello or Drew County.
Monticello Police Department, Drew County Sheriffs Deputies, and Arkansas State Police (the investigators of the incident) responded to the call.
The Arkansas State Police confirmed the fatality this morning, but did not release the names of the victims, pending notification of next of kin.
According to Drew County Sheriff Mark Gober, Deputy James Slaughter is currently on administrative leave from the department, until he’s cleared, pending investigation of the incident. Gober told MLive, “Deputy Slaughter did an excellent job performing his duties, protecting the lives of other law enforcement officers.” Gober added, “The investigation and leave are mandatory in any officer involved shooting.”
MLive will post updates when they become available.
The following comment was posted by MPD chief Eddy Deaton:
“To begin with, I want to thank all the witnesses that came forward last night. You spent many hours at the police department waiting to be interviewed by investigators. Your time and patience is greatly appreciated. Without your willingness to get involved this may have turned out to be an even more tragic event than it was. To the officers who responded to the call, you all handled the incident in a safe and professional manner. Actions taken by the officers kept a very bad situation from escalating to an even more serious incident. To Deputy James Slaughter, you were the only officer at that moment that could have done what had to be done due to crossfire and background. You made a safe and accurate decision that brought the incident to a stop. To all the responding emergency personnel , EMS from both services were on scene in just a few seconds after the call was given for them to come. The 911 dispatch center kept the situation under control by directing personnel to the scene, calling for ambulances, medical choppers, gathering information from the public and making and receiving many phone calls and radio request. To the Monticello Fire Department, thank you for helping with traffic and assisting with security. To the Arkansas State Police, Troopers Knight, Norris and Cross, thank you for your quick response to the scene and assisting with whatever we needed. To the State Police Company B investigators, Thank you guys for all you did and will continue to do in this matter. You guys are top notch when it comes to investigations. I am sure I have forgot to mention someone, so please forgive me if I did. Monticello should be proud of their emergency personnel and the way they all responded. This is a fantastic group of men and women that did an outstanding job. Thank You All !!!!!”

good job deputy james !!!!!!!
Proud to know that we have officers like Deputy Slaughter on the force, sincerely.
Violence not only causes grief for the ones that are victims, it also causes grief for those the perpetrators leave behind. Prayers for all involved and their families, that they may find peace in a time of sadness.
We are very grateful to our local law enforcement. The officer did what he had to do in the line of duty. We are thankful he and all our officers are safe.
Thank you Deputy Slaughter and others who did what needed to be done! May God bless all of those involved during this difficult time.
I’m very proud of you, daddy.
I know you absolutely love your job, even in times like this.
You save lives.
You’re my hero.
it seems that any place isn’t safe anymore–we hear it on the news & think that will never happen here—we never know—there is just so much crime everywhere & drugs & booze are involved in a lot of the crime scenes.
Way to go Slaughter! I’ve known u for a long time and u have always been an amazin officer and friend! People can really count on u. David wld b so proud of u!!!
Such a terrible thing – an innocent life taken too soon. Kudos to all the officers who responded; well done. I know it’s a hard thing to do – to shoot a perpetrator, but you saved lives by your actions. Thanks for being there when it could have escalated into a worse tragedy.
Monticello is fine. Many people came forward as witnesses and waited several hours to make a statement. It is a sad situation, but it is one we could all learn from. The report states these people aren’t from Monticello so how is the problem Monticello? If Monticello is actually doing something wrong then take a stand, complaining will get you nowhere. Don’t call it names unless you are willing to do something about it. And if the report is wrong it needs to be changed — this is what goes down in the records as what really happened but I digress.
It’s about community and as long as Monticello stands together and fights AGAINST things of this nature, we have nothing to worry about. We are doing everything we can and crazy things happen to test your faith — that’s life. Don’t let things like this ruin your outlook. I mean if you were in Little Rock, how many people do you think would come forward?
KIND OF MAKES ME WONDER JUST WHAT IS THIS WORLD AND TOWN TURNING INTO?!!! THANK YOU OFFICER SLAUGHTER FOR BEING THERE TO PROTECT YOUR FELLOW OFFICERS!! JOB WELL DONE!!! TO THE OTHERS THAT WERE INVOLVED, BEING THE WITNESSES, PARAMEDICS, TROOPERS.. THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE TO THE COMMUNITY!!!
Thank you to all of the witnesses that gave statements to the investigators & thank you to all emergency services involved. The victim was my niece. Her 6 year old daughter is now left without her mother. Please keep her family & friends in your prayers.
A beautiful young lady gone forever from those who loved her most.
A young man will more than likely spend the rest of his youth in a State Pen.
All losers here.
Bravo to the Law Enforcement Officers.
Prayers to all.
There was a time in Monticello when he would not have been allowed to drag her all the way from the back of the store and out the front door by her hair.
First of all, my heart goes out to her baby, parents, and family. May God Almighty bring them a peace that passes all understanding. I don’t think where they were from is an issue because she didn’t live that far away. We don’t just need to pray for our neighborhoods. We need to pray for our country. Domestic violence happens every day. Parents- teach your children their worth, guide them and teach them in the way that they should go. Then pray without ceasing. I am truly shocked that more people are concerned with the publicity of this than the horrible loss . Do we support our defenders -definitely. No greater love than this, that a man shall lay down his life for his friends. We hope that never has to happen but we know every day it is a possibility. Thank you for all you do. But truth be told this is a tragedy where somebody’s momma, somebody’s little girl, somebody’s best friend ever, will never come home. Life was cut short . That is tragic. While in a few months it will no longer b a topic of discussion for the public. This will live on forever to those who love her. I know that The Lord my God is good, and while I may not understand, I trust in Him because I know he understands. The Lord is the strength of my life. – with a broken heart and tears in my eyes I want you to know just how much you are Loved Samantha
terrible thing here.praying for girls family and the boys mother.she cant help how he turned.also stan monticello is a great place.this is a warren problem just ended up in drew county.great job mr slaughter.hope you back very soon.great jog on all law inforsement.
he should die to, not in the pen for the tax payer to pay for feeding him, and takeing care of him, he gave her death, and that what he NEED!!!!!
SAD…….This is hitting home.Read your BIBLE it’s the end of time the devil is working over time
It’s a very sad story. This type of activity happens all around us it’s not a county problem, there is no one to blame. It’s a problem with society and people who choose to do wrong. I pray for Samantha i graduated high school with her and i pray for her little girl and for Samantha’s family.
Just because crime happens in a town doesn’t suddenly make it a horrible place to live. People comment on here and say Monticello is dangersou and all that well newsflash; people are getting shot in Wal-Mart nowadays standing at the check out line. But we cannot live our life in fear daily. We can trust in God and have a peace!
Great job to our law enforcement officer who did the right thing.I am glad they were there on the scene and the shooter was not able to get away.
It breaks my heart for Samantha’s family and friends.
Sarah, the police were called. Possibly it happened too fast for anything else.
MY PRAYERS ARE WITH YOU ALL!!MAY GOD WRAP HIS ARMS AROUND THE FAMILY AND FRIENDS!!
My heart goes out to her family. He shouldn’t get anything less than the death penalty, in my opinion. What a tragedy.
