SEARK Reading Council First Meeting of the Year
September 27th, 2018 by SubmittedSEARK Reading Council held their first meeting of the 2018-19 school year on September 24,
2018 at the Drew Central Middle School Library with a “Fall Into Reading”Theme. President
Karen Robinson welcomed members and guests to our first meeting. Kim Wilkerson,
Partnership Coordinator/Licensure Officer from UAM Department of Education, gave an
overview of the new Foundations of Reading assessment for teachers going in education. The
council is sponsoring a Young Writers’ Competition this fall for all 1-12 writers in our five county
area. This year the top three overall winners will be entered in a statewide contest. Winners will
be honored at a spring event called “Everyone’s an Author” by Arkansas Literacy Association at
Harding University on March 2, 2019. Forms will be emailed or hand delivered to schools.
Deadline for entries is November 29, 2018. Contact Cindy Flemister at

nominations for Literacy Educator, Community Leader and Agency in Literacy until December.
