Sadie Johnson Center To Open April 14 – Parks Committee Sets Rental Fees
February 14th, 2013 by Joe BurgessThe new Sadie Johnson Community Center is scheduled to hold it’s grand opening Sunday, April 14 at 3 pm.
You can call City Hall, beginning April 1, to reserve the building for dates on or after April 15.
The Monticello parks and rec. committee, at their Tuesday meeting, set for rental fees for the next facility.
To rent the new structure will cost you…….
$125 will rent the big room for 4 hours or less
$75 will rent the small room for 4 hours or less.
$175 will rent the entire building for 4 hours or less.
$175 will rent the large room for 4 hours or more
$125 will rent the small room for 4 hours or more.
$175 will rent the entire building for 4 hours or more.
These rates apply to all events, private, family, civic, or business.
$ 125 deposit is required for all rentals, at the time of reservation.l

Prior to the fire and loss of the old “community building” anyone could rent it for $35.00 and no deposit since whoever is renting the building are responsible for any damage or mess made during the time they were using it. Now you have to pay an outrageous amount of rent and deposit to reserve the Sadie Johnson Community Center.
I think us taxpayer’s paid rent while our tax dollars were rebuilding this community center? Charging 35.00 is understandable but these amounts are astronomical. Thank goodness the Fairground building, VFW, American Legion and the armory are still allowing people to pay a reasonable amount to be able to use their establishments. And it’s also cheaper to rent the Country Club so yes there is something very wrong with these stated rates. You may have lost a lot of possible renters by trying to make people get a loan to be able to use your building when actually it’s everyone that paid taxes building.

higher rent is to pay for unplanned cost of rebuilding a burned down building. inform all you know not to burn this one down or rent will get higher than that.
Since the insurance and our tax dollars paid for the new building, it doesn’t really make sense for the rates to be so high. I fear this will cause the building to sit empty much of the time, which was not what was intended when it was rebuilt. As Bryce H. said, thankfully we have many good other buildings in Monticello that charge much more reasonable rates to the general public for events.
