Remembering My Dad

June 21st, 2015 by

daddyEveryone has their individual “precious memories” of their father, including me.

My dad, Charles Burgess, was born in  Ashley county in 1926.   During World War II, he served in the Navy on the USS Grayson in the Pacific theater.

After the war, he attended barber school in Little Rock and met his future wife of 58 years.

After graduating, he moved back to Hamburg,  and soon opened his own  barber shop (similar to the ones we see on TV from the 1950s).   I remember there were always plenty of stories from the customers, and a hot cup of coffee .

When my dad was growing up east of Hamburg in the Promised Land community,  he worked with his dad farming and logging (before log trucks  were widely available.)

For around 50 years, Daddy was always  involved in some form of farming.   From horses and cattle, to raising corn and baling hay,   In his 60’s, hunters from other states traveled to get his “Farm raised bob-white quail” There was always some form of crop or critter growing at the Burgess place.

I remember Father’s Day, 2004.   My sister, Bennie Carol Wade Dunavan and I  surprised him by join our folks at Ftn. Hill Baptist  for Sunday morning worship.   She played piano for the service,  and I sang.   After church we all had dinner.  It was a Father’s Day to remember.

My father passed away three months later.

Our morals, principles, and work ethics are “inherited” from our parents.

And so are most of our “memories”.
