Professor Arrested for Threatening Officer

November 5th, 2012 by

Around 10 pm, Tuesday night, a UAM professor was arrested by University Police for disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, and threatening an officer.

Guy Nelson, a mathematics professor at the university was arrested at the college’s science center, where it took two officers to take him into custody.

Nelson was allegedly “weaving and swaying” as he was talking to the officers.  He did not smell of intoxicants, but his pupils were dilated.  He refused to answer any of the officers questions at the time of his arrest.

Nelson has since been released.

  1. former student says:

another one—?? what type of professors are we bring in these days?

  2. This is great says:

I have a son that attends this college and has for three years. I wish that the administration of this College would start checking out backgrounds before hiring new staff.I am scared that their school enrollment will start declining if they are not careful.

  3. janice miller says:

Its seems more and more common to see a uam professor in some type of trouble…..

  4. Concerned citizen says:

What kind of professors do we have at UAM! Every other month one is getting arrested!

  5. uam mom says:

crazy people work everywhere, its not just at uam. there are quite a few where I work. don’t jump on the “bash uam” band wagon.

  6. Former Resident says:

“New staff?” Nelson’s been out there for almost a decade. And let’s all please pretend like this is a new thing. Surely nothing like this was happening forty years ago when the “Feel good, Flowerchild” movement was in full swing. The only difference is, with the ease of access the internet provides, it’s not as easy to hide your head in the sand and act like it isn’t happening in your community.

  7. Anon says:

I seriously doubt that Mr. Nelson was involved in anything illegal or unethical. He has a serious medical condition that can cause him to become disoriented and unresponsive. Until evidence of any wrong-doing comes forward – which is not presented in this article – I will believe that this is just an unfortunate event of Mr. Nelson’s poor health causing him to become extremely confused.

  8. Robert Graber says:

Try to remember that people are considered innocent until proven guilty.

I have known Guy Nelson for years. He is a caring person, and a dedicated teacher. He is not the osrt of person who threatens people. I wish everyone would reserve judgment until all the facts are known.

  9. factcheck says:

I happen to know this man and the facts will come out on this. Things don’t always seem what they appear.

  10. 138 says:

I think he is diabetic and his blood sugar ran down on him. I have seen him out there and he’s a nice guy.

  11. C.S.P. says:

UAM employs more than 500 faculty and staff. Having two of those arrested is less than 0.4% — hardly an epidemic. As for background checks, Guy Nelson has been employed (without incident) for many years. We don’t know that UAM didn’t perform a background check on him when he was hired. Regardless of whether they did or not, background checks only turn up previous criminal history. They don’t predict the future.

  12. Stephanie says:

I do think it is a good idea to reserve judgement until all the facts are presented. Medication can sometimes alter a persons state of mind..just saying…

  13. Annoyed says:

Hey heres an idea for all the “judgement” comments above, how bout we let Jesus do that since it is HIS job an all. Im pretty sure none of “us” can cast the first stone.

  14. Observer says:

If you want to know what a man will do in the future, look at what he has done in the past.

  15. Pennyworth says:

We really don’t know what occured between the university professor and the campus cops. I know Mr. Nelson to be a good man and I don’t believe he would have done anything criminal.

  16. UAM Alum says:

When all of the facts come out on this, I am sure Mr. Nelson will be proven to have broken no laws. If I have broken no laws and am being arrested anyway I imagine I would resist myself.

  17. Student says:

I have had Mr Nelson in class and I know he is diabetic. He is a nice guy! Hope and pray he is cleared!

  18. Uam student says:

Mr. Nelson is a great, caring and fair professor, And even if there is some other law broken, we are all human and make mistakes, professors, judges, and etc. are not exempt, and will pay for those mistakes as the universe sees fit. That being said, assuming when all the facts have not been presented is unfair and of no use, other than to fuel the gossip train.

  19. David says:

“If you want to know what a man will do in the future, look at what he has done in the past.”

I have to agree with this comment. So let’s look at his past. Years and years of being committed to his job and his students. I don’t know what went wrong on the day Mr. Nelson was arrested, but I do know that this type of behavior is NOT normal for him. Until he is found guilty of something, I will not pretend that I know everything about the incident, and I will not appoint myself as his judge.

  20. Josh says:

I would like to let you all know that this man, my grandfather, has had diabetes since childhood years and has to take insulin shots twice a day in order to function like the rest of us. If he forgets to take a shot, his blood sugar drops and he becomes very dis-functional, Im surprised that he even was able to walk to the police car since the last time that happened we had to call the ambulance because we couldn’t help him. This is not drugs or alcohol or anything like that, this is a disease and people need to read up before they post there close minded hateful comments.

  21. Pamela Nelson says:

I am reading this for the first time, October 22, 2015. I remember when this happened. My fiance, Guy Nelson, was severely diabetic and his blood sugar was so low that night that he could have died from being taken to jail and left for hours before, finally being taken to the ER. Guy is gone now, but I would really hope something has been done to prevent this from happening to another person. Rest in peace, Baby. I miss you.
