Police Drug Dog Searches MHS – Hunting Rifle Found in Truck

Friday morning, the Monticello Police Dept. and Juvenile Parole and Probation Dept, along with the Bradley County Sheriff’s Dept. canine unit, conducted a random search at Monticello High School with drug dog
One notable items found was a hunting rifle, inside of a students pick-up truck, on the MHS parking lot.
The juvenile male student was suspended, and charges are pending. The prosecuting attorney will make the decision on any charges which may be filed.

What do people expect when they put guns into the hands of children? It is a way of life around here. No one under the age of 18 should be allowed to handle a gun. They are not mature enough. I saw several boys under the age of 18 all carrying rifles in broad daylight. But yet, there are certain thing that I cannot do and I’m an adult. But then again, non-gun owners do not have any rights.
How did a drug dog find a hunting rifle inside a pick-up truck?
Should the boy really be suspended or charges filed if there is a legitimate reason? If was his dad’s truck and his dad left it in there after hunting or if he left it after hunting. I do understand the issues involved in light of recent and not so recent school shootings, however not everyone is psychotic.

Schools have been gun-free zones for at least 22 years. Owning a device designed solely to kill comes with responsibilities, including being aware of gun laws.
Also, under the federal Gun-Free School Zones Act, you can have a gun in a gun-free zone as long as it is unloaded and secured in a locking gun rack or container.
That is sad. I carried a gun everyday to school in my truck. That is where it stayed because i loved to hunt and thats where i would go on the way home from school. I wonder the same thing that Hank Hill said how did a drug dog find a rifle in the truck unless it was in plain site. Which if it was then apparently he wasnt hiding anything. And to legend people like you are the reason the world is the way it is. I have kids and i teach them responsibility. From the time they can hold a gun. Whether its real or not they are taught to respect it and always keep it pointed in a safe direction. The one big lesson is that an unloaded gun is just as dangerous if not more so. Tell the young man that this is not a good time in the world to carry a gun in your vehicle to school and let him be. If he does it again then call his father and let him handle it. Gee Whiz America Wake Up!!!!!!!!!!!!
I can understand the suspension if it is suppose to be a gun free zone, but I can’t see charges being filed unless the police see this young man as a threat. Hope common sense will be the deciding factor.
@legend that may be the most reasonable thing i have ever heard! children learn faster and better than adults, that is a proven fact! it makes way more sense to have your child handle and learn about gun safety from a young age! these parents should have taken it a step farther and reiterated a few times how important it is not to take a gun to school. my guess is this kid and hundreds more have done this same thing hundreds of times and no one ever got killed because of it!
Ive been around adults holding guns for the first time before, it is super scary!
1. adults think they know best even if they know nothing on the subject
2. because of number 1 you cant portray the same emphasis on safety and danger of keeping the barrel in a safe direction at all times. because adults don’t listen. you can take a gun away from a kid if they aren’t being responsible, its a little harder to do that with an adult…
i would rather be in a hunting party of 12-16 year old kids who have been properly educated and taught on gun safety than 30 year old adults holding a gun for the first time.

This is to legend……you can not put an age on being mature to carry a gun because i know grown men and women that are over the age of 18 that doesn’t need a gun. Parents teach their children how to handle them. I remember when i was in school we used to carry them in are trucks all the time cause we would hunt after school and my house was in the country and i wouldn’t have time to run home to get my gear before hunting.
I understand the laws but something has to give.

I don’t see the big deal really. Back when America was America kids got spanked, parents raised them instead of “They Gramma be watchin dem”.
Kids had chores, respected elders, said yes sir and no ma’am and had morals.
They used to value other people’s life, they still do in this area, mostly.
But i’ve seen some of the most disrespectful small kids at wal mart too.
Bring prayer back in school, the pledge back in school and spankings and discipline at home. That is what America needs.
I would not worry about a deer rifle in a truck, it’s probably been there all year long.
How many drugs did the dog find? Or can we not say that because of who the kids are.
But who is to say who is might be psychotic or not psychotic? When you shove killing down someone’s throat all of a kid’s life, how can anyone know who is going to go crazy and blow a PERSON away? We need tougher gun laws and hunting laws in this country. It’s gotten way out of hand.
Here is a governmental thought:let’s put the blame on the gun for being in the truck and not the person that left it in the truck!
Gun control is not the answer. People control of the guns would a novel approach! As for the comment that non gun owners don’t have any rights, well guess what? You just used one by freedom of speech! You should be thankful to live in a nation that allows you the very freedom and rights you want to claim you don’t have. Instead, it is easier to just gripe.
My heart really goes out to the young man. Im sure it was just a hunting rifle that was forgotten about & left in the truck.
Hank Hill dogs are trained to smell the gun powder that is in the bullets. But I don’t
think charges should be brought on this kid, remember we are in the south and the majority do hunt, he most likely just forgot that the gun was there. Don’t judge people for someone else actions.
I agree we use to carry gun’s on a rack on the back windshield of our vehicles and was no problem but since then there is a law that no firearms on ANY school campus’s period. Monticello schools have already had one student bring a bb gun and he was expelled for the rest of the year. UAM had one and also and that student was sent home and lost his scholarship for bringing a gun on campus. If it’s against the law then its wrong regardless why it was in the truck. It they do something about it someone is going to get mad if they don’t do anything someone is going to get mad. If someone had a gun on campus that ended up in the wrong hands that caused injury to someone then it would be law enforcement and school boards fault for not removing the gun from the campus. NO FIRE ARMS on school property is pretty plain and simple nothing hard to understand about that statement. Doesn’t matter what sex, race, age, student or teacher there should be no guns on any campus since it’s against the law. I also agree not everyone is psychotic as Jessica mentioned but you cant allow the non-psycohtic people to have guns on campus just because they are not going to harm anyone. All students should be treated equal.
I handled a gun when I was 6/7ish. At 16 you get your hunting license and have gone through a safety course.
What about these kids texting and driving with a car load of friends??
I am not worried about a 16 year old carrying a gun in broad daylight, go on east end or pine bluff at night, and have adults with guns, that is what should worry people. All them are purchased illegal, with drug money and can’t be traced. No background check and they aren’t insured either.
I’m sure it was an honest accident that it was there, punishment yes, but excess, no.
We are turning our schools into prisons. Have you really noticed just how many rules and regulations and laws are in our schools. WHEN DO WE STOP? WHY DON’T WE WORK ON THE REAL PROBLEMS WITH GUNS. Mental health, violent video’s and moves, lack of parenting leadership, morals. Schools use to be a fun place to attend. Students have rights too.
when i was in college at UAM (very recently) i knew more kids with guns in their truck everyday than i did without. no one was ever hurt, no one ever went on a mass killing spree…
I’ve heard stories about in the 70’s guys would shoot deer from Maxwell’s balcony!!!! then clean it in the shower!! how is a few hunting rifles under the seat more “out of control” than that????
people with guns haven’t gotten more “out of control” actually responsible gun owners have dialed it way back! anti gun people think every gun they see is being held by a mass murderer ready to mow down innocent children…. give me a break!!!
I think it’s the law not the schools choice to create this particular rule. Not saying they don’t have some crazy rules but this one is not their fault. This young man had no intentions of going on a shooting spree but what about someone that got in his vehicle with the owner or if someone broke into his vehicle? I would hope nobody would do that but look at the other schools that have had to face this kind of problem but sadly it was to late to save those lives, so why not correct the issue before anyone else has to deal with the loss of a child while they are at school. Charging him is not the answer I dont think he probably forgot it was in there but making it known its not ok to do that. Always check your vehicle if you have been hunting etc. Everyone saying its wrong to make a big deal out to the gun being in the truck, nobody is fussing about the reason the dog hit on the vehicle to begin with.
If you honestly think about it… Crazies strike in GUN FREE ZONES! Each and every gun “incident” from our schools to our movies theaters to our churches have happened in gun free zones. I feel if you go to any “gun free zone” you are a SITTING DUCK for any crazy. Taking guns away won’t fix any of these problems because there will be psycos no matter what you do. But what we need to address actually is this. Over medication of the population with PROZAC, and all these other antidepressant pills that are at the heart of almost all these shootings. ( do some research) But the drug company’s and main stream media will not touch this one because it’s all about the money. I miss America, and sadly I don’t think she will ever be the same. We the people should not have to sacrifice LIBERTY for SAFETY! One famous quote comes to mind. “A people that give up liberty for safety deserve neither.” May GOD bless ya’ll!
