  1. remembering says:

Rodney was my daddy’s first cousin, and his best friend. They were inseparable growing up. Rodney was a pilot, stationed at Pearl Harbor. December 7 was his day off, and he was in town when the attack started. He raced back to the base, got in his plane, and was taking off when he was killed. That is the rest of the story.

Rodney’s mother was a native of Monticello; Linnie Shelton. His aunts and uncles were Gaston (Bud), Robert (Bob), Allie Bell, Ruby and Earla Shelton. His grandparents, Robert and Linnie Shorter Burks Shelton, ran the local livery stable in Monticello.

  2. Ward 2 Taxpayer says:

There is much more informative on Ensign Foss. Also on the USS Foss
DE-59, named in his honor. On the Internet.

  3. Brian Rodgers says:

Might I add this man also had a battleship named after him.

  4. Matt says:

Too bad he doesn’t have a military grave marker. Someone should look into this.

  5. Veteran Service Officer says:

Foss was the first US servicemember killed in combat operations in the pacific for WWII.
