April 4th, 2017 by iPhone
23 drivers are scheduled to be in District Court, this morning, charged with passing a stopped school bus. This traffic violation has a fine of $370.
On average, one Monticello driver is ticketed for this very dangerous driving habit, every school day.
According to state law (cited below), all drivers are required to stop for buses that are discharging or picking up students, regardless of which side of the roadway they are on. This includes multi-lane highways, such as HWY 425.

Just picture 23 drivers hitting 23 kids! Come on people; if you are in that big of a hurry leave early!!! Good job law enforcement!!!
This is a good thing. I see people drive by buses which is very dangerous. You never know when a kid will run out in front of you. Please stop.
the state police have a gold mine here. the bus stops on the east side heading north, the police stop the cars heading south. my wife was ticketed there recently . if she had tried to stop she would have been rearended. they are not doing anything illegal, but monticello does not want to become known as a speed trap. my suggestion is that the city police go there each day and stop the south bound traffic. this would protect everybody. jerry webb
I spoke to the AR State Police several years ago. The officer told me there is an exception to this law when the highway has a median or physical barrier down the center. 425 does not but some 4 lane roads in AR do. The exception makes sense as the school children are not at risk from traffic in the opposite direction.
