Parks Committee Report: Soccer Restrooms, Grants, League Info Requested
September 14th, 2012 by Caleb BurgerThe Monticello Parks and Recreation Committee came together Sept. 13 to discuss a variety of old business regarding infrastructure, monuments and more.
The committee discussed the plans to build a concession stand with public bathrooms. Michael James researched the means necessary to complete the project. The first option discussed involved a prefabricated building costing $164,396.
“They call it a turnkey quote, which means start to finish they take care of it then they hand you the key and it’s ready to roll,” James said.
It was discussed that the committee could complete some of the work. If they took care of the concrete slab, the roof, the concession finishes, the hand dryers and the privacy screens the price would come down to $140,000 delivered and installed.
Karen Connelly, the committee chairman, said “The bottom line is we just don’t have the money, and we need to use what we have.”
The other set of plans presented would involve the city doing the construction with a metal building and using bricks to construct the walls. They would lay the concrete slab, construct the walls and then complete the plumbing and electric, which would be subcontracted out. It was mentioned that the health department all ready approved such construction. The committee approved the plans for the city’s construction of the concession stand and bathroom building.
The Albert Williams Monument discussion touched on the materials and plans for its construction. The location needed to be decided on but was aimed to be by at the north pavilion where Williams did a bunch of his work. The family of Williams requested a text to be on the monument, which will need to be worked with to get it fitted for the allotted space.
All the materials have been donated for the project so the next step is deciding who is going to construct the monument and when it will take place. There is a big reunion coming up next summer the monument is aimed to be done before then.

A recreation grant discussed was going to need to be compared with others more before a decision could be made so it will be brought to the next meeting. It was noted that everything is in compliance with regulations.
The information sheet for leagues and organizations that used the city property and facilities for sports last year will be sent another information sheet, which was slightly altered for 2013.
The next parks and recreation meeting will take place on Oct. 11.

It’s about time they built those restrooms! How many years have kids played soccer on those fields? I think it’s ridiculous that it has taken this long.
Will someone from the parks commitee answer this question. How do we not have money to have someone to do a turnaround job on something that is needed but we have money for a personal monument.
