Parks Commission Projects Update
March 10th, 2012 by Mandy MossParks and Recreation Commission Chairperson Karen Connelley gave several updates during their monthly meeting Thursday evening.
She stated that progress is being made towards the rebuilding of the Sadie Johnson building.
“I’m glad to say that we have come to final resting place on the plans and we are about to get started.” – Conley
Taking off 20% of the building’s size brought plans into budget and allows the City to afford the project. The section that was removed was said to be something that could easily be added in the future if the City desired.
The same contractor from the Sadie Johnson Building is working to bring the bathroom and concession stand project at the Sports Complex soccer fields into budget. Once the plans are finalized, bids will go public.
In Amphitheater news, Connelley said they will soon begin taking bids for construction public to news outlets. The bids will be taken back to Parks Commission, and once accepted, the bids will go to the City Council for final approval.
On Feb 10, Chairperson Connelley was asked to make a second presentation to Arkansas Parks and Tourism to try to gain a grant for an observational walking trail at Lake Monticello. She made the presentation and reported to the Commission that, “unfortunately, we were declined the observational trail.”
Connelley stated that there were 33 applicants trying to get the grant, and no specific reason was given as to why Monticello was declined. Only 1 million dollars in grant funding was available. This pilot program will not be extended after this year.
“It was worth as shot… I wish we were approved.” – Connelley
