One Monticello Life – Robert Akin – Candidate for Drew County Judge

“I’m a natural born leader,” Robert Akin, independent county judge candidate, said.

Demonstrating leadership started as early as grade school and continued through high school and into the workforce. He mentioned always being a leader in clubs in high school including running the rodeo club, which sent and paid kids’ way to nationals. Akin presided as president of the State Chuck Wagon Association with 700 members. This organization worked with special needs kids through Ark of Arkansas and Sunshine School by putting on rodeos for them. He served as vice president of Maintenance Local at the Pine Bluff paper mill requiring him to represent and negotiate contracts for 400 people.

PrimeLending Celebrates Grand Opening of New Office

PrimeLending celebrated their ceremonial ribbon-cutting last week, with a catered meal for their guests and tours of their new facility.

The PrimeLending staff also presented awards recognizing our local Veteran’s organizations, UAM, and the Cornerstone Coalition.

Revel Jackson won a 32” TV, Many other door prizes were given away throughout the day.

DC Students Earn All-Region Choir Recognition

Several Drew Central students recently made the Southeast Junior and Senior All Region Choirs. DCHS students are Jessica Wishard and Caleb Eubanks, 1st chair; Michael Carpenter, 4th chair; Katie Taylor and Hunter Neptun, 7th chair; Kyle Kamminicki, 9th chair, Samantha Jo Chapman, 17th chair; Jazmine Rivera, 20th chair; Bianca Rochelle, 2nd alternate. They will be participating in the senior high choir.

MFD Responds to Fires, Wrecks

The Monticello Fire Dept. was called to this mobile home fire, Sunday afternoon, around 2 pm.

The cause of the fire on Florence Road is undetermined. The residents were not home at the time of the fire.

MFD also responded to a home fire at Cottonwood Lane and HWY 35, near Lake Monticello, around 7 pm, Tuesday.

The rescue team also spent several hours on the scene of Monday’s fatal crash at Wilmar, along with their routine duties.

The drawing was held as a part of the Robin Hood for Judge Campaign.

Drew County 4-H Poultry Club Excells at State Fair Poultry Show

Drew County 4-H Poultry Club was well represented at the Arkansas State Fair Poultry show this weekend. The first 3 places in Junior Showmanship Competition went to Drew County students. Pictured are (l to r) Sunni Deb Weaver, 3rd place, Ethan Graves, 2nd place and Bree-anne Lanthrip, 1st place.

Ethan’s Black Modern Game pullet was chosen to win Reserve Champion Modern.


Local Dancers Win State Fair Competition

Students from Monticello Dance Academy competed in the Arkansas State Fair Youth Talent Show Finals on Saturday night, October 20th. The tap dance group “It Don’t Matter” consisting of Charlee Carter, Mary Beth Wigley, Emmalee Satterlee, Alex Jones, Ashlen McRae, and Bliss Jaggers won the dance group division Thursday night at the semi-finals and advanced to Saturday night’s finals. At the finals they won the dance group division and $500.

Charlee Carter also competed at the semi-finals on Thursday night with her tap routine to “Pencil Full of Lead” and advanced to the finals. She won the dance solo division at the finals as well as $500.

These girls are under the instruction of Allison Neill and are in their 7th, 8th, and/or 9th year of dance at MDA.
