Kayla Jackson Is UAM’s First Three-Time Softball All-American

UKayla Jackson continues to add to her legacy as one of the best softball players in University of Arkansas at Monticello history.

Jackson became the first three-time softball All-American in school history Wednesday when she was named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-American Second Team. The senior pitcher from Hallsville, Tex., was a third team All-American in 2010 and a second team selection last year.

Drew County Native to Donate Book Proceeds to Local Museum

The Drew County Museum and Archives have recently been offered an opportunity to gain some much-needed income from the proceeds of a book written by Dr. James William Willis, who was inducted into the Drew Central Hall of Fame, last week.

Willis is a native of Drew County, who grew up in the White Hall Community south of Monticello and graduated from Drew Central. He was the son of Earl and Lela McKinstry Willis, local educators, who were both native Drew County residents. Willis’ father was a long-time superintendent of the Drew Central schools, and his mother was an English teacher at both Drew Central and Arkansas A & M College. Later, they moved to Little Rock to work with the state department of education before they retired in Monticello.

Reginald Glover Is UAM’s 50th Distinguished Alumnus

To Reginald Glover, the University of Arkansas at Monticello – and Arkansas A&M before it – have always seemed like part of his extended family.

Glover, a retired banking executive, long-time volunteer fund-raiser and all-around booster for the university, is UAM’s 50th Distinguished Alumnus. Glover will be honored during commencement exercises this Friday at Steelman Fieldhouse.

“Worst City Council Meeting Ever” Video – 4th Most Watched ML Video Ever

The “you’re lying – name-calling” city council video from Monday night reached the 1,000 play mark, less than 24 hours of being posted.

It reached the 1,700 play level in less that two days.  The 3rd day produced another 250+ plays. It is expected to break the 2,000 mark mid-morning, Friday

One alderman said that she was “embarrassed that the city has had to go through this.”


One Monticello Life – Thad, Nikki, & Colton Mitchell – 2012 Drew County Farm Family of the Year

“I was born and raised on same property we’re living on now. This 180 acres of land has never been bought or sold, it was homesteaded by my family. It goes back to my Great Great Granddaddy. I’m the 5th generation farming this land.” – Thad Mitchell

Thad and Nikki Mitchell, along with their six year old son, Colton, have settled on the family land to continue with the farming tradition and raise their family. This year, they have been selected as Farm Family of the Year for Drew County.

Thad and Nikki’s farming business largely consists of raising Bermuda grass for hay, along with some Alfalfa, and producing eggs for Tyson Foods.

Rape Charges Filed Against Local Man

A 40 year old Drew County man has been arrested and charged with the rape of a juvenile.

The Drew County Sheriff’s Dept. arrested Michael Walls, Saturday, following the issuance of a warrant, alleging that a juvenile female had been sexually assaulted.

Walls is being held in the Drew County Detention Facility,after his first appearance, Monday, where his bondwas set at $100,000.

 


City Council Votes to Accept Bids for Fire Station & Move Funds for Sadie Johnson Center

The City Council voted unanimously to allow Mayor Allen Maxwell to begin advertising for bids for the fire station to be built at the W.C. Whaley lot.

The Council also voted to combine CD’s and budgeted items that have not, or will not be used this year, in order to fund the deficit in the Sadie Johnson Building Fund.

Fire Dept. Training with Propane Tanks

The Monticello Fire Department held a training exercise for extinguishing LP gas fires at the Drew County Fairgrounds, Saturday.

Southern LP Gas Company donated 400 gallons of gas to be burned in the exercise.

At least 5 area fire departments took part in the training session, which practiced extinguishing propane fires on tanks and piping fixtures.


Judge Reverses Warren Schools Termination of Teacher (Monticello Resident), Cleared of Charges

April 23rd, 2012 by

Circuit Judge Sam Pope reversed Warren School Board’s decision to terminate a teacher, Former Warren High School JROTC instructor Col. Robert Avery, saying that the board “was not a fair and impartial tribune in its decision making in this case.”

Col. Robert Avery was charged with first-degree sexual assault in 2009 when a 16 year old female alleged he assaulted her at his residence. Avery was found not guilty by a Drew County jury in October of 2010. His position at Warren High School was terminated.

Stephanie Hill announces for City Council Alderman

Stephanie Hill has announced her candidacy for Monticello City Council Alderman Ward 2, Position 2, in the upcoming 2012 Democratic Primary Election that will take place on May 22nd. The position is currently being held by Ms. Claudia Hartness.

Stephanie, a native of Southeast Arkansas, graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Arkansas at Monticello and has made Monticello her hometown for the past 22 years.

Drew County Extension Homemakers Council Contributes $30,000 to UAM Students

Last week, the Drew Central Extension Homemakers Council made a huge investments in the future of Monticello, as they made a contribution totalling $30,000 to UAM.

The donation included a $15,000 endowed scholarship, a $5,000 endowed gift, and a $10,000 Centennial Circle contribution.

Chancellor Jack Lassiter told the group that their contributions will be benefiting “students 100 years from now.”

 


JACKSON THROWS NO-HITTER, GETS TWO WINS ON DAY

Kayla Jackson threw her second no-hitter of the season the first of two wins over the Southwestern Oklahoma State Bulldogs, 3-0 and 3-2.

The UAM ace got her 25th win of the season in the seven-inning affair. She was two runners away from the perfect game, as the only blemishes on the day came in the third inning on a third-strike passed ball and a walk in the fourth inning.
