Monticello Memories – History of Drew County’s EHC Clubs – Part 1

The Drew County Extension Homemakers Council is a dedicated service organization that began over 80 years ago in Drew County with local clubs who met in many communities throughout the county. Today there are 9 Extension Homemakers Clubs in the county, but in 1956 there were actually 23 active county clubs educating and serving the citizenry.

Friday Wreck Sends 2 to Hospital

Around 3 pm, Friday afternoon, a Mercury Grand Marquis and a Jeep Cherokee were involved in a severe automobile crash on HWY 425 North, at Rose Hill Cut-Off.

Two occupants of the Jeep were transported to DMH by MASI.

The Drew County Sheriff’s Dept. worked the scene and traffic, which was cut down to 2 lanes.

Reliable Wrecker and Dan’s Towing removed the vehicles.


MFD Responds to Fire at Recycling Center

Around 8:15, this morning, the Monticello Fire Dept. responded to the report of a fire on the yard of the recycling center, on East Jackson Street, at the old Burlington mill.

The blaze seems to have been limited to a storage area on the old parking lot.

Kaylee Ross celebrates her 5th Birthday Wednesday, June 6, 2012. She is the daughter of Niki Kelly Ross and the late Robert Ross, the little sister of Skylar Ross, and the granddaughter of Bobbie Ross, Tim and Virginia Kelly.

Happy Birthday Kaylee!! We love you! Love Grandma Bobbie and Aunt Louise (Weezie).


Bank Donation Fund Set Up for 4th Grader Seriously Injured in Boating Accident

Bekka McIlvoy, who was critically injured in the boating accident in Pine Bluff, recently, is 9 years old and attends Drew Central Elementary School.

A donation fund has been set up in her name to help her family with medical and travel expenes. It is at Union Bank and Trust under the name “Bekka’s Donation Fund”.

The Family wants to thank everyone for the prayers, thoughts, phone calls during this very difficult time.

UAM To Host Freshman Pre-Registration Sessions June 18-19 and New Transfer Pre-Registration on June 20

The University of Arkansas at Monticello will hold two pre-registration sessions for incoming freshmen June 18 and 19, according to Mary Whiting, director of admissions.

The June 18 session begins at 12:30 p.m., in the Fine Arts Center, and the June 19 event begins at 5:30 p.m., in the Fine Arts Center. Only students who have applied for admission and have received mail notification may pre-register on those dates. Letters of invitation were sent to each student with a request for a reply.

1st Friday Fun & Singing on the Square

Friday brought with it great weather, and the monthly “Singing on the Square” sponsored by local businesses.

Again this month, local musicians provided live entertainment, country style, while visitors, shoppers, family and friends looked on.

This is planned to continued the first Friday of each month, so mark you calendars for Singing on the Square,.

Barkada Fire Dept. Hosts Ice Cream Social

The Barkada Community Volunteer Fire Dept. hosted an ice cream social, Saturday, along with desserts, and tours of the fire station.

An update on the status of the Barkada Fire Dept. was appreciated by the approximately 40 in attendance, and board members and guests were introduced.

A few political comments closed out the evening, which seemed to be enjoyed by all.


No One Injured in Roll-Over Wreck

Thursday, just before noon, the driver of this Chevy truck lost control of the vehicle, on HWY 35 West.

The vehicle struck a mailbox, before rolling onto it’s roof.

Neither the driver or the passenger were injured in the accident.

Arkansas State Police, Drew County Sheriff’s Deputies, and MASI responded.


Winchester Celebrates 100th Birthday, Gets Land for Park as a Birthday Present

Saturday, the city of Winchester celebrated 100 years as an established city.

Shown here are Chief Deputy Robin Hood, State Representative Sheilla Lampkin, County Judge Damon Lampkin, former Mayor Merle Jackson, Miss Ruth Peacock, and Lary Zeno.

Miss Peacock celebrated her 103rd birthday during the event.

Winchester native Lary Zeno, whose dad ran a “general store” on  HWY 138 near Old Hwy 65 and the railroad, took the birthday celebration to announce that He was donating the land where the celebration was being held to the city of Winchester for use as a park.


UAM Scholarships To Two EAST Students

Two 2012 high school graduates have been selected to receive Environmental and Spatial Technology (EAST) scholarships to attend the University of Arkansas at Monticello next fall.

The recipients are Parker Palsa, a graduate of Monticello High School and the daughter of Eddie and Tommie Palsa; and Tyler Harrison, a graduate of Star City High School and the son of Brenda Harrison.

Did Anyone See………

This blue Toyota Highlander was hit while parked in the Ameca parking lot around noon, Wednesday. 

Red paint appears to have been transfered from the vehicle that left the scene (may have been pulling a trailer).

More Info Released on Fatal Car Crash on HWY 278

SalineRiverChronicle.com reports that Warren Police and the Bradley County Sheriff’s Department had been collaborating to solve a series of burglaries and thefts over a two week period. Some of the stolen items were recovered. The items had been sold. Law enforcement had gained information which caused them to develop a convicted felon from Monticello, as a suspect in the burglaries.

Veterans Present Awards to First Responders

The local veteran’s organizations, as part of their annual Memorial Day program, recognized 4 local first responders for the service to Monticello and Drew County.

Officer of the Year awards were presented to Billy Barnett of the Monticello Fire Dept.,  Matt Outlaw of the Arkansas State Police, and Danny Chisom of the Monticello Police Dept.  Ben Michel of the Drew County Sheriff’s office was also honored, Ben’s plaque was accepted by Chief Deputy Robin Hood.


Special Memorial Day Series – 5 Tributes to Local Patriots

Drew County has recently lost two more of its members from that generation of soldiers known as the “greatest generation”, because of their sacrifice during the WWII years.

Since today is Memorial Day, we will show respect and pay tribute to five great Americans and Monticellonians, as we reflect on my interviews with them for the Veterans Oral History Project when I asked them to share with me memories of their WWII service.


Memorial Day Tribute – Olen Cockrell

It takes many support people to operate an Army – or a Navy. This story tells about one man who filled a special need in the service of his country while readying the seamen to fulfill their duties.

David Olen Cockrell was drafted and entered the US Navy on June 3, 1943. He recalled that he may have decided to enter the Navy because he had had a favored cousin, Oscar Miles, who had died on the USS Arizona when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941.

Memorial Day Tribute – Charles Jackson

This information was shared during interviews as part of the Veterans’ Oral History Project through the Library of Congress. 

Charles Jackson’s military service began when he graduated from Henderson State Teachers College in 1942 and was invited by a group of naval officials visiting the graduates to enlist in a naval officer’s training program. He began this program in the fall at Northwestern University in Chicago and received his commission as a lieutenant in the spring of 1943.

Memorial Day Tribute – Dr. Roy Grizzell

Let’s remember the very secret WWII mission of the late Dr. Roy Grizzell.

Dr. Roy Grizzell had a long and varied career in the military that began before WWII started. In the winter of 1940 he was sent to Fort Bragg, N.C. as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Infantry. He was assigned as Range Officer and Supply Officer on the post, thus beginning his career with the Military Police.

I didn’t have the pleasure of his personal acquaintance for long, but I consider our friendship a highlight and miss his counsel and support. He was an intensely strong-willed patriot, a devoted family man and a fervent supporter of our country. Robie Scott was one of a kind – the kind America needs more of today.
