Brian Ramsey Returns To UAM After Stint With Great American Conference

Brian Ramsey, assistant commissioner for communications of the Great American Conference, is returning to the University of Arkansas at Monticello as assistant athletic director for media relations.

Ramsey was UAM’s sports information director from 2007-11.

“We are pleased to welcome Brian Ramsey back to UAM,” said Athletics Director Chris Ratcliff. “Brian did an excellent job as sports information director and with his added administrative experience with the conference office, will bring fresh insight and new ideas to the Department of Athletics.”

Two Drew Central Students Selected For Tobacco Control Youth Board for 2012-2013

The Family Service Agency (FSA) held it’s conference in Little Rock at the Arkansas 4-H Center, June 14-16. Youth from all over the state attended this conference to continue the youth-targeted statewide grassroots campaign Y.E.S. (Youth Extinguishing Smoking) Team to educate and encourage youth leadership.

Kaitlyn Barnes caught her first catfish with her hands while noodling at Lake Chicot with her dad Chris Barnes of Barnes Guide Service, this past Saturday June 16th. She is 14 yrs old.


101 Degrees

The Commercial Bank sign said it all, when it showed 101 degrees, Monday afternoon.

Remember to water your pets, and please, do not leave them in your vehicle.

Also check on your neighbors, especially the elderly.


DWI #3 Conviction – DWIs #4 & #5 Pending

A local driver was convicted of his third DWI, last week, for events that occurred on August 26, of last year.

Around 8:30 that evening, State Trooper had a safety checkpoint set up near the intersection of Jose Chapel Road and Florence Road.  As they were checking vehicles, they saw a vehicle come to an abrupt stop, 1/4-1/2 mile up the road, and turn in at a cemetery.

Frances Juanita Pamplin

Frances Juanita Pamplin, 75 of Monticello, passed away on June 14 at Drew Memorial Hospital. She leaves to cherish her memory: loving husband of 59 years Alvin Pamplin, Sr of Crossett; children: Frances Jenkins, Donna Noble (Billy), Alvin Pamplin, Jr, Herman Pamplin, and Roy Pamplin (Tina); siblings: Jan Hunter (Robert), Barbara Fisher (Thomas), Ricky Roberts (Marion); six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.

Flag Retirement Service at Courthouse, Photos

A Flag Retirement Ceremony was recently hosted by Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, Disabled American Veterans and Woodmen of the World will be held at the Drew County Courthouse.

The public was invited to see the proper way to retire an American Flag that is worn and tattered.

DCHS Cheerleaders Named Premiere Award of Excellence Recipients

Drew Central High School Cheerleaders were recently recognized at their summer cheer camp hosted by the National private cheer camp company, Premiere Cheer Camps.

The team was selected by Premiere Cheer Camps Staff based on their outstanding sportsmanship, spirit, and growth in the areas of cheer throughout camp. 

Drew Central High School cheerleaders will be featured on the Premiere Cheer Camps national website, www.premierecamps.net in recognition of this achievement. Each squad member recieved an individual ribbon as well as the Premiere Cheer Camps Award of Excellence team certificate.

New Trends in Tobacco and Substance Abuse – Registration Information

Tobacco and drug use remain issues that affect the health and viability of children and families. This presentation will inform participants about the new and growing trends in drug and tobacco use, and the effects of usage. Topics will include laws that govern use of tobacco and various substances around children. New and emerging drug and tobacco trends (Special K, Bath Salts, Snus and Dissolvables). Information regarding stash gear will be included. Particularly relevant for those working with children and families impacted by substance abuse, and those dealing with adolescents and teens.

Jason Cater DVM is announcing his candidacy for Drew Central School Board, Zone 3.

Cater is a 1996 Honor Graduate of DCHS and a 2000 Honor Graduate of UAM. He graduated from Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2009. “I have deep family ties to Drew Central Schools including my two sons who are in elementary school as the 3rd generation of Drew Central Pirates.

“It is my desire to serve on the school board to help move the school into a positive direction for the future. In addition to my advanced education, I have 12 years of experience successfully managing my own business with my wife, Sara. Growing up on a farm taught me the value of hard work, family, and education. This life training will help me make wise decisions about all aspects of the school district, including the financial concerns. I enjoy working with people and have the positive future of Drew Central at heart. Fatal Wreck Claims Life of Local Man

Michael Keith Williams age 43 of Warren, was killed Saturday, as the result of an automobile accident in Bradley County. According to Arkansas State Police, early Sunday morning, Williams was driving his Chevy pick-up west on Bradley County Road 34, when the truck left the roadway, struck a tree, and overturned.  There were two other passengers in the vehicle. 

Williams was an electric technician for J. P. Price Lumber Company.

Frasers Funeral Home is in charge of the funeral services.

 


Annette Hall Memorial Scholarship Recipients Recognized

Chronological order is fuzzy in some cases, but the Southside Club is generally acknowledged as the oldest surviving club.
