East Gaines (Main to Gabbert) Painted as “One Lane Street”

October 13th, 2012 by

This week; painted parking lines on one-lane East Gaines St.

Last week; no lines painted on ?-lane East Gaines St.

East Gaines, from it’s intersection with Main St. to it’s intersection with Gabbert St., was re-painted with parallel parking spaces on both sides of the street, late this week.

Although it never ceased to be a “one lane” street, with no center line and no (clear) parking lines, most drivers have used it as a two lane roadway.

Please note the new markings, and be aware of the change in driving habits of other drivers.

Roll-Over Wrecks Keep Rescue Team Rolling over Recent Days

October 2nd, 2012 by

Yesterday, around 4:30, Monticello Fire & Rescue team was paged out to the report of a Mercedes SUV that had flipped on HWY 35, near Lake Monticello.

The vehicle was eastbound, lost control, and flipped, before coming to a stop with the driver pinned inside.  A firefighter arriving on the scene helped her get out of the vehicle, as others were arriving.  MASI transported the Little Rock lady to DMH, DCSAO worked the crash site.  Dan’s Towing removed the Mercedes.

Sunday morning, Fire & Rescue were called to Davis Street, where a man was backing out of his driveway, when he missed the road, and backed over a large culvert, rolling his car over into a ditch, pinning him inside of his Hyundai.

He was safely removed from his  car.  MPD worked the wreck scene, C&L removed the car from it’s perched position.

Monticello Schools Receives $10,000 Grant for Learning Garden from Farming Education Group

October 1st, 2012 by

Before the Monticello Jr. Billie football game against Hamburg, Thursday night, Monsanto presented a $10,000 grant to the Monticello School District that was awarded through America’s Famers Grow Rural Education.

The Monticello School District received nominations from farmers Joe Noland and Jeff Felts. The grants totaled 176 across 39 states that totaled $2.3 million for the selected districts. In Ark. 58 school districts received nominations from 303 farmers and five districts including Monticello received the grants.

The program allows farmers to nominate their school district for the award who then must apply. The grant serves the purpose of enhancing math and science based education and will allow for expansion of the school district’s learning garden program to reach 6th through 8th graders, which will allow them to “learn the principles of science through hands-on activities.”
