Construction on the new Centerpoint Energy buildings in the Monticello Industrial Park is nearing completion, and should be housing their regional work station soon.
Centerpoint plans to move all area operations for the southeast Arkansas region to the new facility, including construction, service and meter reading operation.
Centerplint’s southeast district includes 13 counties, and will likely have it’s 18 area employees based out of the Monticello facility.
The after school gardeners harvested some sweet potatoes from the garden this past week before the frost.

That seems to be the case, as a loaded log truck was photographed turning from East Shelton St. onto S. Main, recently.
Cherry Street is open to log trucks. Old Dermott is not. Shelton St. appears to fall into that “undecided” category.
Carpet Medics owner, Randy Phillips, is traveling to the east coast to assist to the thousands of homeowners whose homes have been damaged by Hurricane Sandy.
Phillips says, “There are still hundreds of thousands of people whose homes are waiting to be repaired, and before that can happen they will have to be dried. The storm surge filled many homes with as much as 4 feet of sea water and although the water has receded the structures are saturated. There are hundreds of restoration contractors like us there but they can barely scratch the surface of the work needed to be done.”
The MHS Forensic Team travelled to Russellville to compete at the Russellville High School Cyclone Forensic Tournament. The team returned with several awards including a 1st place sweepstakes award. Twenty-seven students competed in 10 individual events and one group event. The team earned 3rd place in readers theatre group event with their interpretation of 13 Reasons Why, a novel by Jay Asher.
Greyson Ashcraft recently celebrated his 4th birthday.
His parents are DeVonda Harvey & Richard W. Ashcraft of Monticello. Greysons siblings are Ryeli Ashcraft, Alexis, Rebekah & Jensen Harvey.
Drew HEALTH will be supporting The Woods Nursing Home and Rehab Center Angel Tree efforts this year.

Mr. McRae’s 2nd grade class at Drew Central are shown being involved in an estimation and measurement math activity.
The goal was to estimate in centimeters the projected length of the gummy worm completely stretched without breaking.
The students then assisted one another in stretching the gummy worm to its maximum length for accurate measurement.

CONGRATULATIONS! to MHS Choral Director Mrs. Bennie Vincent for being selected by her colleagues as the 2012-2013 Southeast Region “Director of the Year.”
During the past two years of teaching at Monticello Middle School, Mrs. Vincent’s choirs received Superior Division I Ratings in performance and sight reading at Choral Performance Assessments (CPA). She is in her first year as the Monticello Sr. High Choral Director.
Officers from the UAM arrested a professor of mathematics on October 30, charging him with disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, and threatening an officer.
Guy Nelson, a mathematics professor at the university was arrested at the college’s science center, where it took two officers to take him into custody.

The students at Discovery Children’s Center enjoyed lunch with the American Legion and VFW, Friday
After lunch the children presented the American Legion and VFW with flags that they made.
The MHS Delegation to the 2012 Arkansas Student Congress earned 7th place overall. Daniel Wigley, Hannah James and Jacob Chisom earned 5th place in their House of Representatives. Earning excellent awards were Elizabeth Wilson (committee, caucus), Erin Campbell (caucus, floor debate), Daniel Wigley (caucus, floor debate), Hannah James (floor debate), Alex Jones (floor debate), and Jacob Chisom (committee, parliamentary procedures). Daniel Wigley and Hannah James earned superior awards in committee; Hannah and Jacob Chisom earned superior awards during the party caucus session.

Former Drew County Judge candidate Jessie Griffin,this morning, endorsed Robert Akin for that position in the upcoming run-off election.
Griffin told MLive, “I’m supporting Robert because he’s the best candidate in the race. Robert is a good honest man, who has good experience to serve in the position of county judge. Robert ran a very clean campaign, and will do a good job for the county. I feel Robert is the best choice for Drew County judge, and encourage everyone who supported me to vote for Robert Akin in the run-off election.”
Griffin also pointed out, contrary to rumors, if Akin is elected, Griffin will not be given a job with the county.
Friday, around noon, this driver of the Olds Alero was traveling on Old Warren Road, heading toward Monticello, when he lost control. The vehicle ran off of the roadway, and into a line of trees, knocking several trees over.
Drew County Sheriff’s Deputies worked the wreck. Reliable Towing removed the wrecked Olds.
The driver was cited for driving on a suspended license.
The temporary tags on the Alero ran out the day before the crash.

A Monticello man, who had been sentenced to probation for an earlier sexual assault, accepted a guilty plea, last week, for a charge of 2nd degree Sexual Assault, that he’d been charged with rape for, last November.
As trac-hoe operators were nearing completion of their project on the Marketplace II parking lot, one of their machines fell into the deep ditch they were digging, when the ground beneath it caved in.
No one was injured, and they were working to removed the huge piece of machinery of of the predicament, soon after the accident.
The Amphitheater at McCloy Park is still under construction because of unexpected architectural challenges. Rickey Calhoun gave a statement on the progress of the project and stated there was not a tentative completion date at this time.
At Thursday night’s Parks & Recreation Committee meeting, a local lady asked the Parks Committee about local residents and businesses being asked to “make donations” to furnish the soon-to-be-completed Sadie Johnson Community Center.
Mosquito Beach Pet Emporium is Monticello’s new pet store, carrying small mammals, birds, fish and reptiles, along with pet supplies, feed, live and frozen feeders, cages and tanks. They will be glad to work with customers on special orders.
They are located on HWY 278, behind Ray’s, and are open Tuesday through Saturday, from 10 am to 6 pm.
