Drew Central Fourth Graders attended the Arkansas Civil War 150th Anniversary Event on January 18th at the Arkansas Post National Memorial Museum. The area outside the museum was set with thirteen stations. Each station had people dressed from the time period of The Civil War while telling stories.
A medicine woman, Dyan Bohnert, explained to the students how maggots had been used to clean wounds. A woman in Confederate uniform, Marde Clardy, showed photographs of women in soldier’s uniforms and told stories of women who fought as men because women were not allowed to fight. Students were given the opportunity to play townball, a game similar to baseball.

Ace Benjamin Rawls will be celebrating his first birthday on Sunday, January 27.
He is the son of Jeff and Jamie Rawls of Monticello and the little brother of Jaxon Rawls.
Ace is the grandson of David and Cindy Rawls and Jim and Julie West all of Monticello.
He is the great-grandson of Katherleen Rawls and J.D. and Sandra West, the late Curley Rawls, the late James Benjamin (J.B.) Smith, the late Lucy Brown all of Monticello and the late Betty Travis of Warren.
Monticello Police are searching for Chevy Z71 truck that was stolen Saturday night.
The truck reportedly has a black hood, red cab, and gray bed assembly.
The truck also has a Superman logo on the tailgate.

A 44 year old California man, arrested in July by MPD, after a local business owner entered his shop, to find the stranger holding his cash register, received an 8 year prison sentence, Tuesday, in Drew County Circuit Court.
After well over a decade with both the Arkansas Dept. of Correction, and Drew County Sheriff’s Dept. auxiliary unit, Drew County’s new 911 Co-ordinator / Emergency Services Manager has experience with handling “unexpected incidents”.
However, on his first day on his new job, the log truck wreck (shutting down Monticello second busiest intersection) shows “you never know what will happen, and when it will happen.
Former Drew County Judge Damon Lampkin and newly appointed District Court Judge P. Luevonda Ross were honored for their achievements at Monday night’s Martin Luther King birthday celebration by the NAACP.

Benji Ryburn and Ronny Williams of Ryburn Motor Company, in combination with Toyota Motor Company, donated $5000.to the local “FEED THE KIDS” organization.
The “Feed the Kids” program has grown from 8 children from Drew Central Elementary to almost 150 children in both Monticello and Drew Central Schools.
Native Monticellonian P. Q. Gardner was recently presented an Arkansas House of Representatives Citation in honor of his service to his country in the Army Air Corps during WWII; for his lifelong business pursuits in Southeast Arkansas; and for his role for many years in the education of Drew County’s children as teacher and later superintendent at Drew Central Schools.
Mr. Gardner also founded Drew County’s first cable TV company system and is a longtime realtor in the area.
The citation was presented by State Representative Sheilla Lampkin to mark his December 29th birthday.
A MLive reader sighted a pair of White-tailed Kites just off 16 Section Rroad, near the cemetery, recently.
She submitted the photos to Whatbird.com and the birds were verified as White-tailed Kites.
Those are scarce in our area and usually restricted to the south Texas and Mexico area.

Rebel Smith Curtis age 45 of Dumas, AR passed away on January 19, 2013 in Dumas. She was born July 8, 1967 in New Orleans, LA to Clifford Joseph and Patricia Bryant Smith. She was a Christian and a Licensed Practical Nurse at Delta Memorial Hospital in Dumas for 7 years. Rebel received the Florence Nightingale Award in her graduation from nursing school.
She is survived by her parents, three brothers, Clay (Shelley) Smith Jr. of Geismar, LA, Max (Kelly) Smith of Bella Vista, AR and Dallas (Stephanie) Smith of Siloam Springs, AR, two sisters, Holly (Lloyd) Downen of Dumas, AR and Whitney (Jared) McDonald of Dumas, AR. She also has two sons, J.R. Smith of Dumas and Matthew Kyle Curtis of McGehee, and one daughter, Samantha Kiff of Dumas and two grandchildren, Anna Claire and Shevy.
Visitation will be Monday, January 21, 2012 from 6:00 – 8:00 pm at Abundant Life Church and services Tuesday, January 22, 2013 at 11:00 am, Abundant Life Church in Dumas with burial following at Walnut Lake Cemetery, Rev. Melvin Reagan and Rev. Mack Milner will be officiating. Memorials in memory of Rebel may be made to Hospice Angels in Pine Bluff, AR. Griffin Funeral Home in Dumas will be in charge of services.
