Drew County Developmental Disabilities Council has officially changed their agency’s name from to “Advantages of Southeast Arkansas, Inc.”
The children’s center will change from Sesame School to “Discovery Children’s Center”. Also, the adult center will no longer be The Other Way, but is changing to “Discovery Skills Center”.
The public is invited to the grand opening/ribbon cutting for their new facilities at South Hyatt & East College St., on August 28 at 1pm.
James Milton Washington, 62, passed away on July 30, 2012 at Drew Memorial Hospital. He was born November 26, 1950 in Lacey, AR to Addie Bea Washington and the late New Washington Sr. James was a heavy equipment operator for various employers prior to his failing health.
Mr. Washington join the Pentecostal Church in the Goose Hollow community of Drew County at an early age. A few years ago he met his soul mate, Barbara Pierce, who encouraged him to study the bible and attend church. Both James and Barbara obeyed the gospel of Christ and were baptized and added to the Church of Christ on January 2, 2011. The couple loved the Lord and desired to live according to the scripture was married on February 5, 2011.
He leaves to cherish her memory: loving wife Barbara Washington; four brothers: Eugen Washington of Kansas City, KS; Newt (Shriley) Washington, Jr. of Crossett; Bernard (Shirley) Washington of Fort Worth, TX and John (Kim) Washington of Monticello; six sisters Leola (Burdell) Roberts of Portland, OR; Margaret (Jimmy) Griggs of Bastrop, LA; Gracie (Bertis) Sawyer, Hazelene (James) McCray, Earlene (John) Middleton, and Joyce Darrough of Monticello, AR; and eight step-children: Janeessa Brown, Brandon Pierce, Kellen (Tan) Gray, Katrina Wade, Waymond Wade, Linda Ingram, Renee Wade, and Sharetha Williams; and a host of other relatives and friends. He is preceded in death by his father Newt Washington, Sr.; his brother and best friend Edward (Cook) Washington; brother, RB Washington; and two wives Dorothy Wade Washington and Maxine Ferrell Washington.
A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, August 5th at Kennedy Blvd Church of Christ in Monticello.

Monticello Elementary is seeing record numbers with its upcoming Kindergarten class for the 2012-2013 school year. According to Principal Tish Thomas, the numbers rose from 170 students last year, to 223 for this year.
The large increase of students led to two major issues for the school: too few teachers and not enough classrooms.
The 2012 Drew County Log-a-Load for Kids benefitting Arkansas Children’s Hospital sponsored by the UAM Forestry Club will be held on Saturday, August 4th at 6:00 pm at the Gibson Center on the UAM campus.
Tickets for the fish fry and live and silent auction are $20.00 each. You can be a sponsor by purchasing a table for $500.00 which includes 6 meal tickets and $100.00 of raffle tickets.
Raffle tickets for a $1000.00 gift card for $25.00 each and a Gun-a-Month for $50.00 each are also being sold, and donations are being accepted for the auctions.

A heat advisory is in effect for Southeast Arkansas today, and that will likely be extended further into the week.
Heat index values will exceed 105 degrees across the region with temperatures ranging between 100 and 105 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.
Heat index values as high as 108 are expected. Isolated heat index values will be above 105 degrees from around noon until 7 p.m. in the evening.

Around 9 am, this morning, the Monticello Fire Dept. responded to their second house fire of the day.
A home on Pinecrest Dr. received heavy fire damage in the kitchen and dining area, and severe smoke damage throughout the rest of the home.
One of the residents was gone when the blaze started. The other occupant was able to use her walker to safely escape the blaze, and was transported to Drew Memorial by MASI, due to previously existing conditions.
The fire reportedly re-kindled early in the afternoon, with MFD being paged out again..
Around 1 am, the Monticello Fire Dept. responded to the report of a house fire in the 300 block of East Pope St, where smoke and flames had been reported in a residence.
It is believed that smoke woke someone in the house, who escaped safely.
From a distance, the home appears to be a total loss.

Earlier this month, a Monticello man accepted a guilty plea to the charge of sexual solicitatin of a child and 2nd degree sexual assault.
The Ashley County Sheriff’s Dept. contacted MPD Dispatch, around 11:30 pm, last Friday night, reporting that a school resource officer (also a county deputy) had been taken against her will by an ex-boyfriend, and the vehicle was headed toward Monticello.
Friday around midnight, while MPD and DCSO were working a reported kidnapping, a wreck, and recovering a stolen vehicle (with the suspects still in it) a call came in to MPD Dispatch reporting multiple shots being fired in the parking lot of a local apartment complex.
Most folks have heard about the rare “albino deer,” in southeast Arkansas, but Alicia Maynard recently got a photo of an even more seldom site.

Around 11:45, Friday night, a local man was visiting friends on E. Shelton St., when he heard his Chevy truck crank up. He went outside, and saw his vehicle backing out of the driveway, and called MPD Dispatch.
