Minor Fire at City Drug

Around 8 pm Thursday night, the Monticello Fire Dept. was paged out to the report of smoke at City Drug, on E. Gaines Street.

Due to their quick response, only a box in the storage area was damaged.

Nikki Hood, co-owner of City Drug told MLive how much she appreciated the quick response of the local fire and police depts, and added that City Drug will open at 8 am, as usual, with breakfast and all services in full operation.

 


Berryman Awarded Policeman Of The Year

The Monticello Police Department awarded Patrolman Kyle Berryman, Policeman of the Year.  The Monticello Lions Club presented Kyle $100 at their meeting, Thursday.

Police Chief Eddie Deaton and Capt Carlos Garcia selected Patrolman Kyle Berryman for this prestigious award. They said various criteria was the basis for the award and Kyle’s achievements for the past 12 months far exceeded everyone else.

Kyle has been a Monticello policeman 4 years.  He is married to the former Amber Nixon, a registered nurse. They have two children, ages 8 and 4. Shown in picture are Amber and Kyle Berryman, Lions Club President Don Hogue, Police Capt Carlos Garcia and Chief Eddie Deaton.


Notice to all Drew County Solid Waste Customers

April 1st, 2013 by

Effective immediately, sanitation workers will only pick up trash that is in the county provided containers.  No extra bagged trash that is set out beside or on top of the container will be picked up.

Due to recent back injuries and wounds from hypodermic needles, all cans will be picked up by the automated system on the truck.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

Extra trash containers may be purchased for the one time price of $54.25.

Cliff Gibson Appointed to UofA Board of Trustees by Gov. Beebe

Governor Mike Beebe has named Charles “Cliff” Gibson III of Monticello to the University of Arkansas Board of Trustees.

“Cliff’s appointment helps ensure a dependable voice on the Board for the U of A campuses in South Arkansas,” Beebe said. “His sound judgment and calm demeanor will serve the entire system of schools well in the coming years.”

Groundbreaking Ceremony Held for Public Rail Access Facility at Industrial Park

The groundbreaking ceremony to mark the start of construction of a Public Rail Access Facility in the MEDC Industrial Park was held Tuesday afternoon.

When completed the new rail spur will hook to the existing (soon to be improved) spur at Hood Packaging, and switch to a rail that will send freight cars into the Industrial Site for loading and unloading of cargo. This will likely begin with lumber.  Currently Price Lumber and occasionally Maxwell Hardwood load rail freight at the Jackson Street crossing.

Anna Mae Jordan

Mrs. Anna Mae Jordan, of Monticello, died March 22nd at the age of 92. A native of Lacy, she was born to the late Minnie Spencer-Fausett and Lester Daniels on May 4, 1920. Mrs. Jordan is preceded in death by her husband Thomas C. Jordan, Sr. and one daughter.

She leaves to cherish her memory nine children: Robert Davis, Wanda Jordan-Wilson, Ray Jordan Sr., and Minnie Jordan-Ellis of Monticello; Paul E. David of Queens, NY; Thomas C. Jordan, Jr. of Madison, MS; Yustin C. Jordan, Sr. of Redfield, AR; Morrell Jordan of Washington, DC; and Ronny Jordan of Killeen, TX; her grandchildren, great grandchildren, great great grandchildren and great great great grandchildren; as well as a host of relatives and friends.

Funeral Service will be held at 1pm on March 30th at Morning Star M.B. Church in Monticello with Rev. D.J. Buffington officiating. Services entrusted to Christian Brothers Funeral Home of Monticello ( http://www.christianbrothersfuneralhome.com/).


Monticello Memories – Tour of the Museum, Part 4

Before we leave this office/front bedroom of the Drew County Museum there are a few more noteworthy items to discuss. One is a photograph of the wood-framed, original First Baptist Church built in 1860 and torn down in 1902. It stood where the newer one stands today. Actually I believe the fourth building is the church we see today. First Baptist Church has a long, illuminating history in Monticello.

QC Meets Again to Discuss 1¢ Road Tax Vote

The Drew County Quorum Court called a special meeting, Tuesday night, to discuss the proposed continuation of the county’s one cent road tax, which will be set for July 9.

The main discussion topics were whether to designate a 75/25 or 80/20 split to be designated for the Quorum Court to be able to direct to shortfalls in other budget areas, would thee be a better chance of voter passage if it were divided into two questions, and should the proposed continuation should be for 4 or 6 years.

Power Pole Split by Nissan

Around 1:30 Saturday afternoon, the driver of this southbound Nissan lost control of the vehicle on HWY 425 (north of Lacey) and stuck a C&L power pole.

The driver declined medical attention and left with a family member.

Drew County Sheriff’s deputies worked the wreck scene. C&L power crews replace the damage pole.


New Aiport Hangar To Open Soon

The latest improvement at the Monticello Airport, the new hangar that will be leased to the Price Company, has been completed, except for the parking area.

It is expected to be put into use, generating airport income, within the next month.

Lenora McCullough, born Oct. 2, 1919, died peacefully in her home with family members at her side on March 16, 2013 at the age of 93. She was the eldest of two children born to J.W. Everett & Jennie B. Dodds. She retired from Alameda County Fairmont Hospital in San Leandro, CA in 1982.

Visitation will be Friday, March 22nd from 6-7 pm at Christian Brothers Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral Services & Internment to be held at First Baptist Church in Selma, AR on Sat.,Mar. 23rd at 11:00 a.m.
