At last week’s City Council meeting, someone asked about a “sample pipe section” that was on display.
Mayor Alan Maxwell concluded the monthly meeting of the City Council with an update on the City water project. The final cost of the water project, which includes 4,200 meters and approximately 93 miles of water pipes, is $10 million. Maxwell pointed out that this is a “performance based contract”, which means the city is guaranteed to recover all of its expenses on the project

Monday afternoon, around 4:30, as a driver was attempting to turn off of HWY 35 East, a three vehicle chain-reaction quickly shut down traffic, and sent two drivers to the Drew Memorial Hospital’s’ Emergency Room.
The Monticello Fire Dept. and Arkansas Forestry Commission responded to a woods fire in the Windy Hills area of Old Hwy 13, Saturday afternoon, around 1 pm.
Fire fighters battled the blaze, and had it contained, controlled, and extinguished in approximately an hour.
No structures were harmed, and only an estimated acre of weeds was damaged.

The restitution hearing for former Drew County Circuit Clerk Pat Savage Montgomery was held Monday morning, at the Drew County Courthouse.
Stephen “Stevie” Richardson has been selected to attend the National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine this summer. The 10-day forum is designed to introduce students like Stevie to a variety of concepts in public health, medical ethics, research, and general practice. Students participate in site visits to medical schools and clinical facilities.

Attorney Jenny D. Lemoine of the law firm Gibson & Keith PLLC has been elected to a three year term in the House of Delegates of the Arkansas Bar Association. The House of Delegates is the Association’s policy making body and consists of 81 attorney members from across the state.

A City of Monticello employee was injured in what likely was a work related accident, Thursday morning, at the Monticello City Warehouse.
After a 10:19 call to 911, he was transferred by ambulance to Drew Memorial Hospital by MASI.
Unconfirmed rumors indicate a vehicle was involved in the situation.
Following three years of intense training, four Drew County 4-H members will represent Arkansas at the July 21-24 National WHEP competition to be held at Trafalgar, Indiana. WHEP is an acronym for Wildlife Habitat Evaluation Program.
Elizabeth Wilson, an upcoming senior at Monticello High School, competed at the National Speech and Debate Tournament held in Birmingham, Alabama. The event is sponsored by the Lincoln Financial Group & the National Forensic League. Wilson is the first Monticello High School student to attend this national level competition.
A local woman was ticketed by Monticello Police, recently, after complaints from neighbors about her dogs.
When the animal control officer counted, she had a total of 13 dogs on her property.
The new Livestock Barn has been completed, and will be in use for this year’s fair.
“Country Nights, Carnival Lights” is the theme of the 2013 Drew County Fair & Livestock Show.
This year’s fair dates are Sept. 16-21. with the Fair Pageants and talent show scheduled for Sept. 9-14
A Junior Fair Board has been formed and will be assisting with this year’s fair.

A local 25 year old man accepted guilty pleas in Desha County on aggravated robbery and theft of property, among other charges, Monday, for 40 years in prison.
Tuesday evening at their regularly scheduled monthly meeting, the Monticello City Council reviewed an ordinance that would establish guidelines for owning and controlling dangerous dogs in the City.
The ordinance would not ban any specific breed from the city. It would, however provide requirements for owners of Pit Bulls that go beyond the requirements for owners of other dog breeds.
Prosecuting Attorney Thomas Deen has filed misdemeanor criminal charges against 9 Drew Central graduation seniors following their “out of hand” senior prank, which closed the high school for part of a day, and cost an estimated $5,000 in clean up and replacement damage.

Local businessman Mike Akin was sworn in to serve on the Drew Memorial Hospital Board, Monday, by Drew County Judge Robert Akin, with DMH CEO Mike Layfield.
Between Saturday night and Monday morning, at least 5 Hyatt Street residences had reported having vehicles broken into.
Most of the vehicles were unlocked, but one vehicle was forcefully entered.
At least two handguns were taken, during the theft spree.
The Arkansas Court of Appeals ruled in favor of a Monticello resident against the Warren School Board, following his termination after he was cleared of any wrongdoing by a Drew County Court, following allegations from a former student.
