Hazel Joan Pickens Leonard age 76 of Tyro, Arkansas, passed away on August 19, 2013
Joan was born December 29, 1935 in Peck, Kansas to Homereis and Murriel Hamilton Pickens.
Joan married Harold Raymond Leonard of Tyro, Arkansas, on September 1, 1956 in Wichita, Kansas.
She was an active member of the Monticello Church of Christ. She served as the leader of daughter Cindy’s Girl Scout Troop #33. For many years Joan and Ray enjoyed participating in square dancing with various local groups. Joan retired from The Mad Butcher grocery in Dumas after 25 years of dedicated service. Upon retiring Joan and Ray began traveling all over North America in their travel trailer. Family was always very important to Joan. She loved her grandchildren and many times loaded up those in Arkansas to go visit those in Colorado.
Joan is preceded in death by her father, Homereis Pickens; mother, Murriel Hamilton Burrows; step-father, Jake Burrows; brothers, Keith and Dale Pickens; and grand-daughter, Sharon Gillespie.
She will continue to live through her family, husband, Ray Leonard; children: Mona Still of Hope, Arkansas; Cindy Thornton of Kyle, Texas; Donald Leonard of Springfield, Colorado.
8 grandchildren and 4 great-grand children and a sister: Vera Pickens Warren of Wellington, Kansas.
Visitation held Thursday, August 22, 2013 from 6-8pm, Griffin Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral services held Friday, August 23, 2013 at 3pm, with brother, Paul Mowrer officiating followed by interment in Tyro Cemetery.

Drug Task Force agents, along with Monticello Police, arrested a Monticello man after he attempted to pass a forged prescription at a local pharmacy last week.
According to Lt. Jason Akers of the Tenth Drug Task Force, a Monticello man is facing multiple drug charges after the second search warrant was executed at his home within the past year.
The family of the late Bobbie Lambert, with the assistance of Christian Brothers Funeral Home, followed the traditionas style of funeral processions, for her memorial service, Saturday, as the horse and carraige left Pilgrim Rest AME Church, traveling toward Mt. Zion Cemetary..

Today is the day Arkansas students face the dreaded First Day of School. It’s also the day parents and other drivers face the First Day of School Traffic.
Remember to use caution, especially in the school and residential areas of Monticello.
Drew County has had several trees fall, in recent days, some bringing power lines down with them.
Saturday night, Rock Springs Road had a tree blocking traffic, around midnight.
Friday, the Bowser Road and Babin Drive intersection had a tree and brush fire caused by a tree falling on an electric line.
Earlier in the week, HWY 278 East, along with a few other county roads had reports of fallen trees.
Please use caution; just because a power line is down, doesn’t mean that it is not ”hot,” as was the case with this Barkada Road tree, also on Friday.

A family on HWY 278 West took advantage of the cooler temperatures, to build their own “super water slide” Saturday.
By putting a HUGE sheet of plastic on a hill, and using a nearby water sprinkler, everyone involed enjoyed the party.
During the early morning hours, Monday, someone threw a brick through the front door of the Valero Corner Store on HWY 278 West and entered the building.
Wednesday, the Monticello Police Department and The Drug Task Force made arrests in three felony cases .
Hibbitt Sports was burglarized during the overnight hours of August 13th. Suspects gained entry through chopping a hole in the roof.
A Big congratulations to first time Mini Stock winner Jeff Tucker – 99T of Wilmar, AR. Jeff won his Heat Race and started pole in the Feature and kept it all the way to the checkered flag. Vergie Hart Reeves, 94, of Fayetteville passed Thursday, August 8, 2013 in Fayetteville. She was born January 15, 1919 in Wilmar, Arkansas the daughter of John and Edith Measel Hart.
She was a member of Greenland First Baptist Church and sold Avon for many years.
Preceded in death by her husband, Lee R. Reeves, 1~ son, Roy and wife Sharon Reeves and 1~daughter, Martha Killian, 2 -sons in law Philip Peterson and Don Worrell.
Survivors, 1~son, Wesley Reeves and wife, Debbie of Wilmar, AR; 4~daughters, Vergie Peterson of Murray, KY (husband, Philip, deceased), Betty Worrell of Monticello, AR (husband, Don, deceased), Laura Keeney and husband, Ed of West Richland, WA and Margaret Mann and husband, Mike of Fayetteville, AR; 1 son in law, Melvin Killian of San Antonio, TX; 19 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and 1great-great-granddaughter.

Around 3 pm, Wednesday, the driver of this Pontiac G4 was westbound on HWY 35, east of Monticello, when she lost control and left the roadway.
Saturday, around noon, a hay baler fire was reported on North Gabbert St.
The blaze quickly ignited the dry hay, laying below the baler, as fire began to spread.
The Monticello Fire Dept. responded, and quickly had the fire extinguished.
Last Wednesday, a Desha County jury convicted Roy Lee Russell, of Dumas, for being a felon in possession in possession of a firearm and 2nd degree battery.
Russell was sentenced to 40 years and 15 years to run consecutively, which is the maximum sentence possible for those offenses.
Russell was found not guilty on 3 counts of kidnapping, 2 counts of rape, and one count of 2nd degree battery.
The trial began on Wednesday and concluded about 2pm Thursday.

At the Monticello Economic Development Commission’s monthly meeting, Nita McDaniel expounded on the recent city council meeting announcement that Hood Packaging is in the process of going through another expansion, which will add an estimated 12 new jobs, with an estimated hourly wage of $16
Hood will be investing between between $2M and $4M to add an additional product line. This will create 12 new full time jobs. AEDC has committed $250,000 in forgivable loans to help offset the costs of the expansion project, and on July 25th, the City Council approved an additional $100,000 in forgivable loans from the City war chest to assist with the expansion project as well.
As the planning of this expansion is on-going, new needs continue to develop, and the commission will be meeting soon to discuss these new aspects of the expansion.
ACCORDING TO SHERIFF MARK GOBER, ON JUNE 10, THE DREW COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE RECEIVED A REPORT OF CHECKS BEING FORGED AGAINST A LOCAL RESIDENT’S CHECKING ACCOUNT.
Sherif Mark Gober and the Drew County Sheriff’s Dept. are aking for the public’s assistance in their search to locate a local man, who is a suspect in sereral theft cases and break-ins.
Several business and community leaders were present, Tuesday afternoon, for the ceremonial groundbreaking of Grand Manor Assisted Living, located on HWY 425 North, just past Cablevision.
The level two facility will provide care units for 49 clients, including an area for “memory care” patients.
Just before noon, Tuesday, the Monticello Fire Dept. was paged out to the report of a trailer fire on East Pope Street.
A camper trailer, which was being salvaged for recyclable materials had caught fire, and was full engulfed, as they arrived.
Damage was contained to the camper.

He is a WW2 Combat Veteran who served in General George Patton’s Tank Corps. He retired from Burlington Industries and was a farmer.
A 34 year old Drew County resident lost her life, early Friday morning, when she was struck by a vehicle, while walking on Camden’s HWY 79.
According to the Arkansas State Police, a Drew County man lost his life, as his truck ran left the roadway on HWY 278, three miles east of Monticello.
