After 49 years of work, Bonnie Ellis is retiring today.

Bonnie has served the last 15 years as office manager of KHBM, KGPQ, and KXSA. She began her work career as a teenager in Clara Bailey’s beauty shop.

Her immediate plans include spending time with her family.

Joe Rogers has announced his candidacy for mayor of Monticello as an independent candidate in the special election and the general election.  Rogers is a native of Drew County and a resident of Monticello for 50 years. He has been the manager of his family owned business; Rogers Men’s Wear, for 32 years and served a four year term as Mayor of Monticello from 2007 through 2010.

Thomas “Sonny” Thornhill filed, Monday morning, for candidacy for Mayor of Monticello as an independent. He is running for the special election and general election.
He is a seventh generation Arkansan and has lived in Monticello all his life.

Sam Wherry , a local business analyst and Bishop, has informed MonticelloLive that he will not seek to run in the election for the position of interim mayor .

While not seeking the interim term, Wherry is still considering a run for the four-year term , which will take place in the November election .

The driver of this Dodge pick up truck, pulling a fishing boat, was northbound on Highway 425 shortly after 9 AM Saturday morning.

During the severe thunderstorm and Drew County late Friday afternoon, this large tree on Lacey – New Hope Road fell on a C&L powerline, causing the treetop to catch fire.

Drew County Sheriff Deputies responded, as did the power company.  There were no estimates as to how long power would be disrupted.

Around 6 PM, Thursday evening, this loaded flatbed trailer was pulling out of Wilson Mill Road onto Highway 425 south of Monticello, when it struck a GMC Yukon, which was in the southbound turning lane, attempting to turn onto Wilson Mill road.

10 local business, community, and economic leaders from Monticello have just returned from Washington DC, where they met with our state’s senators and congressmen, seeking federal support for local projects.

Projects included I-530, I-69, and the need for a new science building at UAM.

MEDC’s Bennie Ryburn III considers the trip a success, “We met with a lot of good people that offered to assist us in the search for funding for the issues and projects that we presented to them. ”

Jo Ann Trotter has turned in her petition of signatures to enter the election for interim mayor.

Trotter works at DHS and is a new member of the parks committee.

The Drew Memorial Hospital Board of Directors spent a large portion of Monday’s hospital financial meeting, with their “CEO candidate #1,” that they had recently offered the administrator position to.

As a part of the “state aid to cities” program, 3 local streets were recently overlayed.
The streets included in North Hyatt (near the country club), the west end of Jordan drive (near the armory), and Hillcrest (between Pine and Maple streets).

U.S. Senator Mark Pryor met with Monticello Twenty for the Future, Tuesday morning, in his Washington, D.C. office to talk about how they work together to bring jobs and economic development to Drew County.

According to AshleyCountyLedger.com, a rural Ashley County Bank was robbed at gunpoint Friday afternoon.
