The Jordan Park splash pad will open at 1:00, today.
The city pool opened last week, but due to filter and plumbing issues, the splash pad opening was postponed until today.
At Tuesday’s special called Monticello school board meeting, board approved the next step in constructing a $760,976 turf for Hyatt field , a $516,680 technology building, and a $315,619 fieldhouse, also at Hyatt Field.
Although many residents may find the athletic improvements controversial, some of the intended benefits are discussed below.

The 19-year-old Monticello youth, charged in the fatal shooting of a 20-year-old Monticello man, received a $50,000 bond, Tuesday, on the charges of manslaughter, tampering with evidence, and aggravated assault (against another nearby person).

According to a statement from MPD, on June 1st, 2014 at approx. 6:17pm, Monticello Police received a call of a shooting incident at 537 Lincoln Court.
Recently law enforcement officers from around the state took part in the Special Olympics “Torch Run”.
Locally, the Drew County Sheriffs Department received the torch near the Ashley County line, from ACSO deputies; then ran it to Monticello (literally), where it was handed off to the Monticello Police, who ran it through their portion of the event, where the torch was taken to the next county.
Officers also carried the torch by Advantages, in support of many of our local athletes in the event.
Also shown are local athletes, as they enter the state Special Olympics competition.
County Detention Facility administrator Susan Potts presented this report to the quorum court at their recent meeting.
It describes the breakdown of detainees being housed at the jail, their classification, and who is responsible for paying for their costs.

A 20-year-old Monticello man was critically injured Sunday evening around 6:05, when he suffered a gunshot wound to the head.
At 1:45 Sunday afternoon, 3 occupants of this Cadillac Escalade were injured after the vehicle crashed into a power pole, before driving through the wall of the Monticello Textbooks Bookstore, on HWY 425, near UAM.

Late Friday afternoon, the Monticello Fire Department was paged out to a house fire in the 1700 section of Barkada road.
Although Hamburg is known for it’s Armadillo Festival, a pack of six armadillos was sighted on Tuesday, at a home on Monticello ‘a East Bolling Street.
The City Park Pool and Jordan Park Splash Pad will be open to the public, beginning Saturday.
Regular operation hours are Monday – Saturday, from 1-6 pm and Sunday from 1:30-5:30 pm.

Around 9 o’clock Friday morning, the driver of this Mercury Grand Marquis was heading east of Highway 35 East, with his family, as he lost control of the vehicle near the roads intersection with Old Dermott Road.

Work is nearly complete replacing the foundation around the feet of the Burlington water tank.
Another layer of re-bar was added (above the layer show here), and concrete added for stability.
In late April, after considerable discussion, the Monticello City Council approved an amendment to the City’s contract with Utility Service Group to repair and reinforce the foundation of the Burlington water tower. The amount of this contract amendment is $124,200. This is added to the $476,000 contract with Utility Service Group to do needed initial repairs on the city’s water towers, and then be responsible for on-going maintenance of the water towers.
Twice this week, (empty) log trucks have been forced to take the ditch, to avoid colliding with smaller vehicles in front of them, who stopped quickly with no turn signals.
A Monticello city council member was arrested, around 9 PM Sunday night, after he argued with law-enforcement officers, after being called by a friend/constituent to speak on his behalf.
A 50 year old local man turned himself in to Monticello Police, Wednesday morning, after MonticelloLive posted a surveillance photo of him online, Wednesday.
The report of Sunday night’s incidents which led to a city councilman’s arrest, as seen by a Monticello police officer, was submitted to the sheriffs department.
