Former Monticello resident and UAM faculty member John C. Davis will speak about his new book, From Blue to Red: The Rise of the GOP in Arkansas, at the Monticello Branch Library, on Friday, November 8, at 5 p.m. Davis is a teaching associate professor of political science and executive director of the David and Barbara Pryor Center for Arkansas Oral and Visual History at the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville. The Friends of the Library, a dedicated group of volunteers, works tirelessly each year to support the needs of Monticello’s local library. Through various fundraising activities and community events, the organization provides crucial funding to the library’s programs, including the highly anticipated summer reading program. This annual program is just one of the many ways the Friends strive to keep our library an engaging and educational resource for Monticello residents of all ages.
In addition to funding the summer reading program, the Friends of the Library sponsors various activities throughout the year. In years past, the Friends have organized or co-sponsored popular events, such as a community concert in the park featuring country music’s Ryan Harmon, poetry contests, and special guest speakers. These events foster community engagement and a love for the arts, further enhancing the library’s role as a cultural hub in Monticello. Read the rest of this entry »
According to Monticello Mayor Jason Akers, the City of Monticello will host its 2nd City-Wide Clean Up effort of the year on Friday November 8th & and Saturday November 9th as part of the Keep Arkansas Beautiful Campaign.
Supplies such as trash bags, gloves and safety equipment for the clean up will be provided by the Keep Arkansas Beautiful Program.
All city departments will participate in the cleanup effort on Friday and on Saturday any citizens, church or civic groups wishing to participate may do so. Groups may come by City Hall on Friday and pick up clean up supplies.
Some past clean up participants include Immanuel Baptist, the Church of Christ, NAACP Chapter 6042 & Kim’s Dance Factory. The program has collected thousands of pounds of litter and roadside trash in Monticello since being implemented in 2023.
