Hughes Named UAM Vice Chancellor for Student Engagement

The University of Arkansas at Monticello (UAM) has announced the appointment of Jay Hughes as vice chancellor for Student Engagement.
Hughes has 40 years of combined experience in both public and higher education. He graduated from UAM in 1983 with a Bachelor of Arts in history degree. His career in education began in Crossett at Norman Junior High School as a history teacher. He held positions as a history teacher at Monticello High School and Crossett High School before pursuing a master’s degree in general counseling at Louisiana Tech. Hughes received his M.A. in 1992 before taking a teaching position at Blytheville High School. Two years later, he returned to Monticello as assistant principal of Monticello Junior High School, a post he held until 2000 when he became principal of Monticello Middle School.

New Police Chief Carlos Garcia, a Short Bio

Carlos was raised in New York City where he graduated from high school. After graduation, Garcia enlisted in the US Army where he diligently worked his way up the infantry ranks, traveling to many different countries while learning important leadership, and lifeskills from his experiences and superiors.
In the late 1990’s, Carlos was stationed in Fort Campbell, KY, and assigned as a unit trainer for the National Guard unit in Warren. It was during this time that he began to pursue his interest in Law Enforcement by first joining the Drew County Auxiliary and eventually working as a part-time deputy for Drew County. It was also during this time that he met his future wife, Denise, a Monticello native. Read the rest of this entry »

Collins / Cominto Fire Department Earns Class 6 ISO Rating

The Collins / Cominto Fire Department is proud to announce that they are going from a ISO class 9 rating to a class 6 effective April 1st.
This means lower homeowners insurance rates for members within 5 road miles of either of the department’s 2 stations.
They’re all-volunteer staff was able to achieve this accomplishment by additional training, adding tankers to transport water to fires, adding ponds for draft points to fill tankers, and having a mutual aid program with Dermott’s fire department.
