One Monticello Life: Sgt. Larry Smith
March 30th, 2008 by Joe BurgessSgt. Larry Smith, Sr.
Criminal Investigator
Monticello Police Department
I have known Larry Smith for several years, but never really spent much time around him, until my wife’s truck was broken into a couple of years ago, and he worked the case.
When I started covering the Police Dept. for MonticelloLive, I began to consider Larry to be a good friend. I, like so many others was shocked to here about Larry’s battle with cancer. There are a couple of links below that will take you to the story about the wristbands that local police officers are selling, information about the cook-out to help cover Larry’s medical expenses on April 11 & 12, and photos from Larry’s recent plane ride over Lake Monticello.
But first, here is this week’s One Monticello Life edition, written by Larry’s longtime, family friend, Trish Harvey.
———————————-
Larry was born in Dermott Arkansas and moved to Eudora at age six.
His parents still reside in Eudora today. He graduated in 1976 from Eudora High School and worked as a tanker man for Brent Towing until the summer of 1980. Larry started his law enforcement career in July 1980 as a patrolman for the Eudora Police Department until October 31, 1985 when he moved to Lake Village and became Sergeant over the patrol division. He then began working at UAM Department of Public Safety so he could further his education while working. Larry was hired by the Monticello Police Department on August 9, 1992. He was a patrolman for four years before becoming a Sgt. in the Criminal Investigation Division in 1996. He works all types of felony investigations from Homicide to Financial Identity Fraud and everything in between.
Larry says the best part of his job is getting to work with all types of people, catching the bad guys and helping those in need. His plans for the future are to continue doing what he is doing, until he can’t do it anymore. He considers his co-workers part of his extended family.
He has one son, who he is very proud of, Larry Smith, Jr., who is a deputy for the Drew County Sheriff’s Department; a daughter in law, Chasidy and four grand-children, Lawton, Kelby, Karter and Jalee. Larry is very proud to be called “Papa Smith”. He also has two very special nieces, Laci Harris and Lindsey Harvey. He loves his family very much and on bad days when no one else can cheer him up, his grandkids or nieces always put a smile on his face.
Captain Eddy Deaton considers Larry to be, “a man with a heart of gold. Anytime you need help, he is a phone call away.”
Lt. John Dement, CID, says Larry is an awesome investigator, well organized, extremely dependable and a very good friend.
Lt. Gail Hyatt has worked with Larry about twenty years. She says, “Larry has pulled pranks on me and aggravated me, laughing the whole time with his wonderful sense of humor. On the other hand, if anything needs fixing or anyone needs help, he is always ready to help. Not many people know it, but Larry is a great poet. I am glad to call him my friend.”
Former Mayor Harold West said “I came to know Larry in 1992 after he was hired into the Monticello Police Department by Chief Bob Maxwell. The chief said he had employed a very fine young man who was both loyal and diligent. I found that to be be true along with the fact that he had a very pleasing personality, coupled with a strong work ethic. Larry, you are truly a credit to the Monticello Police Department and the city of Monticello.”
Former Police Chief Sam Norris thinks Larry is the easiest person he has ever worked around, never complained or griped. Anytime anyone asked Larry to do something the answer was always the same “Yeah, I will do it”.
Sgt. Steven Stain, added Larry has provided a lot of memorable moments over he past 11 years with all of us at the Monticello Police Department. He has enjoyed working with him over these past years and looks forward to many more years to come.
Larry’s hobbies are wood work, fishing and spending time with eople that are special to him.
He has 2 cats Puss Kitty and Puss Puss Kitty Kitty.
Larry’s favorites include:
Restaurant- Bonanza
TV Shows- Ghost Hunters, Paranormal State

I grew up with Larry in Eudora. He is the same great person today as he was then. I visited in Eudora with my parents this past week and everyone was sad to hear about his illness. He has lots of people praying for him. So, Larry know that you have lots of help from everyone.
My brother-in-law graduated with Larry in 1976. Manuel Garza said to tell him his thoughts and prayers are with him.
My parents, Harold(Cracker) and Elizabeth Smith
Manuel and Tonia Garza
Richard and Treva Johnson
Vickie (Martar)Hall and Cody Hall

I have worked with Larry for a long time also.I agree he has been an aggravation full of pranks. If he wasn”t pulling a prank on you he wasn”t himself.I miss that at work.Makes the day better when you can laugh. And he will do anything for you though.I consider him a friend you can count on.Just hope I can be a friend he will call on also if he needs anything.Take care and my prayers are with you. Love you and take care Lois Sanders…
First, I want to say Trish, you did a great job on the story! Larry came in to my life when he became a part of my sister-in-law’s (Trish) extended family. Larry has been a joy to get to know and I am so blessed to have him in my life and my son’s life. Larry, you will always be very special to me, Steven, and Dallas. You’ll always be our Uncle Moosehead. We love you and we are praying for you every day. I know you are well taken care of, but if there is ever anything we can do, please call. Love ya,
Valerie
Larry has been at the police department since I started in 1998. Larry is always full of fun and smiles and I can remember him pulling pranks even when I was an aux. officer. I remember what Larry said to me when he found out I was going to be hired full time. “Have you lost your mind”. He said it with his usual big grin, but then said “Im serious”. That may be the only time he told me he was serious about anything other than work. Larry is the type person who doesnt have the word no in his vocabulary. He will even come out to help you on his weekends that he is not on call. I just want to tell Larry that I am praying for him and that Christ will keep you wrapped in his LOVE. Now is the time for everyone that Larry never told NO to return the favor!
I met Larry when I had been in law enforcement about seven years, around February 2001. My first day at the police department, Larry was one of the first people I met. He was friendly, helpful and comical. Nothing has changed.
Many people dont’t understand what a police officer goes through during the course of his or her career. Putting people, especially children, in body bags, photographing bruises on a childs neck, getting bit while breaking up a fight, etc. Those things take a toll on ones ability to joke, play or find the lighter side of most situations. The constant 20/20 hindsight by some in society doesnt help either. With that being said, to have someone like Larry as a friend is a blessing. Larry has made me and everyone around him laugh at some stressful point in our jobs and for that second, whatever was bothering us went away. Talk about God sending an angel..
The Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs, which later merged I guess you could say with the ATF had a saying among it’s Agents after someone had proved themselves beyond question while doing their job- That saying was ‘You are good enough to ride with’, making reference to the old western lawmen who rode horseback. Larry my friend, You are good enough to ride with.
Never involved in politics, honest, straightforward and helpful under every circumstance. People, much less friends, like you are hard, hard to come by.
I will finish my post with this- My favorite quote from Matthew Chapter 5, verse 9. ‘Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the children of God.’ Never forget that and never forget to press the fight, no matter what.
We love you and may you find yourself surrounded by God’s goodwill and strength at all times.
Im a little late in relplying to this but i jsut wanted to say that my uncle larry is the best! i love him so much and he always makes me laugh. living in conway i’m not able to be there for him like i want to but every time i’m home i’m always there to give him his lil lin hugs as he calls it. uncle larry has been a part of my life since i can remember. even though he isnt really my uncle i still consider him one. uncle larry is a stubborn person so i think he is really going to show those doctors that he can live to be 100! we always joke and pick and make fun of each other so to see him sick and not always energetic makes me upset. he is in God’s hands and only God knows what uncle larry’s life holds. i just pray for him every day and hope that he will overcome this awful thing that is taking place. we went fishing the other day and even though he did better than i did i still enjoyed every min of it. when i was younger he used to always go shopping with us and be our bag boy, he’s always a great person to have around. i know that he means alot to a lot of people. oh yea and when i was younger he let us give him a make over he is a very beautiful girl. haha
Uncle larry, i love you and i’m always here for you! your my hero and i cant wait to give you lil lin hugs everday. hold in there your a very strong man and i know you can do it! i love you very much!!

I can’t say that I know Larry as well as many others do but I can say that what I’ve read so far is very true. The few times I’ve been around him were full of laughs! Larry doesn’t seem to become overwhelmed with the small things like many of us do in our daily lives.
I can recall a time when I passed Larry’s office door in a sort of panic looking for a pair of bolt cutters….random I know!! He could have easily said he didn’t have any and left it at that but within 5 minutes he had a pair delivered to the Police Department for me. I honestly feel that most of us do not take the time out of what we are doing to really help someone else and Larry is a prime example of what we all should be doing.
Larry has also had a huge impact on my husband whom he considers a dear friend. A common phrase around the house these days is “You just don’t understand what that man has done for me.†Throughout my husband’s law enforcement career Larry has taken a special role as teacher and friend in his life and I can’t thank him enough for that.
It is amazing how the community and law enforcement family has pulled together in support of Larry and this crisis. I hope it can be an example to everyone.
Larry, you are truly a special person and given blessings to others and didn’t even realize it. We pray comfort and strength surrounds your family.
The Carters
I have to agree with every one about Larry… I know there have been times when I have had questions about certian charges or laws and no matter the time , night or day, I could call Larry and he would answer my questions without complaint. He is also the person who never says no.
Larry, do you still have your super cool necklace? I still have mine!!!
Love you and just remember you can call me day or night if you need anything, you are in our thoughts and prayers!
Carol Anne
I was a deputy prosecuting attorney when Larry joined the force. I always found him very pleasant to work with, polite, considerate and very hard working. Larry your in my prayers, call me if I can do anything.
Larry..
We are praying for you, my friend. There are so many of us that have the pleasure of knowing and having you for a friend.. I still remember when you pulled me over for throwing a coke can out of the car window..I did go back and retrieve it!!! My favorite Bible verse is: CALL UNTO ME AND I WILL ANSWER THEE AND SHOW THEE GREAT AND MIGHTY THINGS WHICH THOU KNOWEST NOT!!! JEREMIAH 33:3
He is the Great Physcian! I truly believe that God is going to intervene and heal you! Just Believe!!!
Take care and May God Bless..
Hey Bud! Many years have passed since we all became friends and really more like family. We are all very proud to know you and know what a difference you have made in so many lives. I know that are many rewards waiting for you and you know we will keep MOM in line. There isn’t enough space to say all we want to say. But when I was there a couple of weeks ago you were still the same as you’ve always been and now my pray is that this is not the end but just the beginning and God has you in Him mighty hand.
I looked over at your resting place. I hate the word grave.Your flowers had fallen down I picked them up.I thought, I hope a cop doesn’t come by and think I was stealing your flowers. That would be a good one for Monticellolive huh.I know you were smileing down on your son this week.R.I.P.
