Old Post Office is a part of Historic Tour
February 22nd, 2016 by iPhoneTo celebrate the 50th anniversary of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, the Arkansas Historic Preservation Program is sponsoring a passport program to encourage travelers to visit Arkansas properties listed on the National Register of Historic Places – including the old Monticello Post Office,
“The National Historic Preservation Act showed a commitment by the United States to recognize the importance of the places that define us as a nation,” Department of Arkansas Heritage Director Stacy Hurst said.
The 1937 Art Deco-style Monticello Post Office, which now houses the Monticello Economic Development Commission, is one of several Depression-era post offices in the state that feature art commissioned by the U.S. Treasury Department’s Section on Fine Arts, in this case a sculpture by Berta Margoulies titled “Tomato Culture.” The post office was listed on the National Register on August 14, 1998.

* Central Arkansas: Fordyce Bathhouse, Hot Springs National Park; Curran Hall, Little Rock; Little Rock Central High School National Historic Site; Toltec Mounds Archeological State Park, Scott; Conway County Library, Morrilton, and Faulkner County Museum, Conway
* Northwest Arkansas: Devil’s Den State Park, West Fork; Drennen-Scott Historic Site, Van Buren; Ozark Area Depot Museum, Ozark; Carnegie Library, Eureka Springs, and St. Joe Depot, St. Joe
* Southwest Arkansas: President William Jefferson Clinton Birthplace National Historic Site, Hope; Crater of Diamonds State Park, Murfreesboro; John Newton House, El Dorado; Lum and Abner Store, Pine Ridge, and Clark County Historical Museum, Arkadelphia.

Passports will be available at each of the stamping sites and at each of Arkansas’s Welcome Centers operated by the Arkansas Department of Parks and Tourism.
