MPD Chief Jason Akers Announces Candidacy for Mayor
May 5th, 2022 by Joe BurgessAkers has been in public service as a law enforcement officer for over 28 years, where he currently serves as Chief of Police in Monticello.
While at Monticello PD, Chief Akers has led with a proactive and progressive approach. Akers implemented the Department’s first policy and procedure manual, written/skills testing for hiring and promotions to ensure fairness and led Monticello to having one of the few state accredited police departments. As Chief, Akers established a multitude of successful programs including K-9, Search and Rescue drone, computer equipped patrol vehicles, food programs for those in need and free security training for local churches. Most programs were possible all or in part using grant or previously available funds.
Chief Akers was recently recognized by the Secretary of Defense as a Patriotic Employer and represents the Arkansas Association of Chiefs of Police as an appointee to the Arkansas Alcohol and Drug Abuse Coordinating Council. Akers also serves on the Board of Options, Incorporated Domestic Violence Shelter for Women.
“All of MPD’s accomplishments are due to teamwork and coalition building between officers, the community, city council members, and the Mayor’s Office. When we are all working together with a shared vision and willingness to listen to each other, we will solve problems together and get things done. I believe our citizens deserve that level of leadership and dedication from their public officials. With your vote in November for Mayor, I will continue to press the fight to move Monticello forward on all fronts for ALL of our citizens”.
