Monticello Schools to Apply for $100,000 EAST Grant, Which Would Effect All MHS Students
November 21st, 2012 by Joe BurgessThe Monticello School Board, at Tuesday night’s meeting, granted permission for the district to apply for a $100,000 EAST grant, to incorporate some of the EAST concepts into all MHS students classes.
The district applied for the grant last year (only 5 were awarded statewide), but this year the chances are more likely to receive possible funding for $100,000 worth of equipment and technology.
MHS would begin the EAST core program with biology and geometry courses, and increase to algebra 2, trigonometry, and chemistry, next year . “Project Lead the Way” also includes a bio-medical program, that could be considered.
MMS’s grant application if approved, could include robotics and engineering courses.
88 MHS students are currently signed up for EAST out of 650. This program would touch all MHS students, in these project based and problem based learning programs.
One administrator summed the benefit with these words, “They’ll still be teaching biology, they’ll be doing it through the project based learning (common core) strategies.”
