Monticello Dance Academy Wins Awards at LR’s VIP Dance Competition
February 25th, 2013 by SubmittedStudents from Monticello Dance Academy recently competed at the regional VIP Dance Competition in Little Rock, bringing home numerous awards.

There are three levels of competition for dancers: Off-Broadway (beginners), Broadway (intermediate), and Hollywood (advanced). Performances are scored by three judges and the awards are as follows: Platinum (285-300), High Gold (270-284), Gold (255-269), and High Silver (240-254). Judges also give out judges’ choice awards (only 3 per awards session), special awards for each genre of dance, and choreography awards. For each level and age of competition there is also a Top 10 of the highest scores announced.
The awards results for the Mini Solos and Duet/Trios and Junior Solos and Duet/Trios for MDA’s performances are as follows (all of these performers competed in the Broadway level):
Olivia Wilson received a High Gold in Mini solos for her lyrical routine “I Will Rise” choreographed by Allison Neill.
Keller Bigham received a High Gold and 6th overall in Mini solos for her tap routine “Twist My Hips” choreographed by Alana Garbacz.
Olivia Wilson and Alli Beth King got a High Gold and 4th overall in the Mini duet/trios for their jazz routine to “Swing” choreographed by Allison Neill.
Alex Pennington got a Gold in Junior solos for her jazz routine to “Circus” choreographed by Allison Neill.
Kate Brown received a Gold in Junior solos for her lyrical routine to “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” choreographed by Candace Howard.
Logan Fletcher received a Gold in Junior solos for her lyrical routine to “Safe and Sound” choreographed by Candace Howard.
Alli Beth King got a High Gold and 6th overall in Junior solos for her tap routine to “Land of 1000 Dances” choreographed by Allison Neill.
Mary Riley Busby and Logan Fletcher got a High Gold in Junior duet/trios for their tap routine to “Tightrope” choreographed by Alana Garbacz.
The awards results for the Mini and Junior small groups and all large groups and Line/productions are as follows:
“You Can’t Stop the Beat,” a Junior Broadway small group tap consisting of Blaine and Reese Morman, Krista Sparks, Anna Collins, Anna Groves, Abby Sass, and Lynsey Hoover received a High Gold and 8th overall. This routine was choreographed by Allison Neill.
“Can’t Touch This,” a Broadway Line/production tap routine received a Tap award and a High Gold. The members of this group are Blaine, Reese, and Karissa Morman, Anna and Caroline Groves, Maddie and Mary Riley Busby, Gale and Grace Lee, Anna Collins, Kate Brown, Olivia Wilson, Logan Fletcher, Gracie Mosley, Alli Beth King, Abby Sass, Krista Sparks, Kayla Arrington, Rivers Frazer, and Mary Beth Wigley. This routine was choreographed by Allison Neill.
“We Will Rock You,” an Off-Broadway Junior large group Hip Hop routine got a High Gold and 1st overall. Also, out of all of the Off-Broadway entries for the entire competition, they were the 2nd highest scoring number. This routine was choreographed by Toni Harris and the members of this group are Lexi and Tristan Thomas, Maddie and Mary Riley Busby, Kate Brown, Madi Ryburn, Madeline Griffin, Jalyn Powell, Avery Barnes, Logan Fletcher, Gracie Mosley, Alli Beth King, Hope Sass, Alex Pennington, Peyton Sinclair, BrookLynn White, Mary Beth Wigley, and Skyler Ashley.
“If I Die Young,” a lyrical routine in the Broadway Teen large groups received a Judges’ choice award and a High Gold. This routine consists of Maddie and Mary Riley Busby, Laura Swain, Hannah Wilkerson, Kristiana Tenorio, Morgan Davis, Madi Ryburn, Olivia Wilson, Elizabeth Echols, Alex Pennington, and Ashlee Johnson and was choreographed by Allison Neill.
“Funk Soul Brother” competed in the Broadway Junior large groups and received a Platinum and 1st overall. They also received the Entertainment Award for the most entertaining number that MDA brought to the competition. Out of all of the Broadway entries for the entire competition, they received the 2nd overall highest score. This tap routine was choreographed by Allison Neill and consists of Mary Riley Busby, Logan Fletcher, Caroline Groves, Kelli Stain, Olivia Wilson, Rivers Frazer, Karissa Morman, Kate Brown, Alli Beth King, Alex Pennington, Lexi Thomas, and Kayla Arrington.
The awards results for Teen and Senior Solos and Teen and Senior Duet/Trios and small groups are as follows (all competed at the Broadway level):
Mary Beth Wigley received a High Gold and 3rd overall in Teen solos for her lyrical routine to “Drops of Jupiter” that was choreographed by Toni Harris.
Kristiana Tenorio received a High Gold for her contemporary routine to “Somebody” which was choreographed by Toni Harris. She also received a High Gold, 5th overall, and a Lyrical Award for her self-choreographed routine to “My Heart Will Go On.”
“I’m a Woman,” a Senior small group jazz consisting of Mary Beth Wigley, Kristiana Tenorio, Ashlee Johnson, and Charlee Carter received a High Gold and 1st overall. This routine was choreographed by Allison Neill.
“Higher Ground” received a High Gold and 2nd overall in the Teen small groups. This group consists of Mary Beth Wigley, Charlee Carter, Ashlen McRae, Alex Jones, Bliss Jaggers, and Emmalee Satterlee and was choreographed by Allison Neill.
The next competition MDA will attend is the Nexstar Regionals in Little Rock March 1-3.
