MHS Mock Trial Team Advanced To Semi-Final Round Of The Arkansas Mock Trial Regional Competition
March 5th, 2013 by Monticello SchoolsThe Monticello High School Mock Trial Team advanced to semi-final round of the Arkansas Mock Trial Regional Competition by defeating Hope High School. The team’s loss in the semi-finals placed them in 3rd place behind Little Rock Catholic High School and Sheridan High School and ended the team’s chance to advance to the state level of competition. The students invest many hours after school in preparation for this event.
The team members competing at Jefferson County Courthouse were Jacob Chisom, Anna St. John, Elizabeth Wilson, Alex Jones, Erin Ashcraft, David deRueda, and MaryKate Jones. Hannah James, a senior member of the team, was unable to attend. Julia Craig served as the team’s timekeeper this year. The attorney coach is Mrs. Sara Hartness, and the teacher coach is Debbie Ashcraft. The regional and state competitions are sponsored by the Arkansas Bar Association (ABA), the professional association for attorneys. The MHS team is sponsored by the MHS Speech and Drama Club.
The competition was held at the Jefferson County Courthouse in Pine Bluff which was one of four venues around the state. The ABA provided the trial case in November, and teams across the state have been preparing to represent both sides of the case.
