MHS Forensics & Debate Qualify for State Competition

April 8th, 2019 by

Interfor 444 Good news6D9BB43A-09A3-4AD6-BD69-981B01D4957BSix members of the Monticello High School forensics and debate team competed in the 2019 Arkansas forensics and debate state championship this past weekend in North Little Rock.

All six members earned the right to compete by qualifying for the state tournament in various competitions throughout the year.

Each of the students was active all year having participated in over half of the qualifying tournaments to which MHS traveled.

Daniel Outlaw, our soul debate competitor, was successful in breaking into the quarterfinal round of competition in Lincoln Douglas debate.  The duo  interpretation team of senior Hope Burmeister and Junior Kalyn Knowles made it to semi finals with their adaptation of Stephen King’s Carrie. Kalyn Knowles also advanced to the semi final round of competition in prose interpretation.

All members of the state team have earned enough points to be inducted into the national speech and debate association, an honor fraternity for high school students.

Even more impressive, Caleb Forrest, Daniel Outlaw, Ariene Thompson, and Michael Underwood are each in their first year of competition.

We are so proud of the students who represented MHS and our town with class and dedication in this academic competition.
