MHS Forensic Team Earns 1st Place in Russellville
November 15th, 2012 by SubmittedThe MHS Forensic Team travelled to Russellville to compete at the Russellville High School Cyclone Forensic Tournament. The team returned with several awards including a 1st place sweepstakes award. Twenty-seven students competed in 10 individual events and one group event. The team earned 3rd place in readers theatre group event with their interpretation of 13 Reasons Why, a novel by Jay Asher.
In International Public Debate, N’shyka Shelton (2nd ) and Cheyenne Wilkerson (4th ) were recognized as superior speakers in this event. N’shyka Shelton advanced to 3rd place as a semi-finalist. Jordan McDaniel advanced to quarterfinals.
In other individual events several students advanced into the final rounds: Becca Stephenson (3rd – poetry), Savannah Reynolds (original oratory), Emily Grubbs (poetry), Erin Ashcraft / Zach Cason (improv duet) and David de Rueda (prose).
Ten performances advanced to semi-finalists in individual events: L J Leslie (poetry), Hannah James. (poetry), Kinsley Akin / Jasmine Dallas (improv duet), Mary Kate Jones / Emily Grubbs (improv duet), Savannah Reynolds (solo), Emily Grubbs (storytelling), Melodie Sandlin / Hannah James (duet acting), Zach Cason (prose), Erin Ashcraft (prose), and Mary Kate Jones (humorous / dramatic interp).
Team members who earned either 3rd place, 4th place, Excellent, or Superior ratings in preliminary rounds but did not advance into semi-finals are as follows: Kinsley Akin (Hi-Di), Erin Ashcraft / Hannah James (mime), Erin Ashcraft (original oratory), Maggie Brown (mime and improv duet), Krystle Conyers (Hi-Di), Jasmine Dallas (prose), Emily Grubbs (mime), Zaire Husband (poetry and improv), Rachel Morgan (improv and storytelling) Hannah James (mime and original oratory), Mary Kate Jones (duet acting), Kelly Murphy (prose), Savannah Reynolds (duet acting), Melodie Sandlin ( storytelling and original oratory), Amanda Shindelar (poetry), Becca Stephenson (prose and solo acting), Hannah Wilkerson (mime), Marty Andrews (poetry), David de Rueda ( improv and poetry), and L J Leslie (original oratory).
Other members who contributed to the team sweepstakes award were Frederica Davidson, Jasmin Miller, Dillon Todd and Jacob Bonfanti. This was their first forensics tournament.
As a result of earning competitive points for participating in forensic tournaments, four MHS students have earned their merit status (25 points) into the National Forensic League. They join 14 other MHS NFL members who may don the silver and red honor cords at graduation. Coach Christy Armbrust has earned her honor status as a NFL coach.
