On Monday, October 4, Monticello hosted the 8-4A district tennis tournament at the Monticello Country Club. The Monticello High School tennis team competed against five teams, placing first in both boys’ and girls’ divisions.
Sophomores Kaleb Romero and Hayden Harrison successfully placed first in the boys’ doubles division. Romero and Harrison played three teams: Magnolia and two from Star City. After playing Magnolia, the boys beat Star City 6-2, 6-2. Such scores advanced the boys to play their second Star City team, where they won 6-2, 6-4 in the championship match. Sophomores Cameron Ray and Tristain White fell short against a Star City team, knocking them out of the competition.
Senior Tucker Breedlove sliced through his competition. Breedlove’s final opponent (Hamburg) proved to be challenging as the first set ended with a score of 7-5 and the boys played a tie break, putting Breedlove up 7-6 and securing him a first place spot in district. Sophomore Ladan Pinkus got knocked out in the first round after falling short to Crossett.
Seniors McLauren McGregor and Olivia Stafford got a bye in first round girls’ doubles along with senior Mary Mencer and sophomore Mia Reginelli. McGregor and Stafford won their first set 6-4, 6-1 against Camden but fell short on their second set with a score of 2-6, 3-6 against Star City. The girls played another Star City team and placed third. Mencer and Reginelli played a dominant first two sets with scores of 6-0, 6-1 and 6-0, 6-1. Their final opponent was a Star City team where they won 6-4, 6-4.
Senior Amelia Ward got a bye in the first round of girls’ singles and went on to win her first and second sets, where she would play a fellow team member in the finals. After a swift first set, her second set proved to be more challenging as she split sets, went on to play a third, and won, advancing to finals. Sophomore Madison Bitely played a total of four sets against Hamburg, Star City, Crossett, and Monticello. Bitely breezed through the first two rounds and fought her way through the third with a score of 7-6 and 6-1. Ward and Bitely faced each other in the finals of girls’ singles where Bitely placed second and Ward first.
Coach Susan Frost was pleased with her team’s performance. “I’m proud of them for playing so hard and for playing with integrity. Very pleased with our results of four first place finishers. We are hoping to be able to advance with our play at state.”
