MES Record Numbers
August 1st, 2012 by Mandy MossMonticello Elementary is seeing record numbers with its upcoming Kindergarten class for the 2012-2013 school year. According to Principal Tish Thomas, the numbers rose from 170 students last year, to 223 for this year.
The large increase of students led to two major issues for the school: too few teachers and not enough classrooms.
In a statement to MLive, Principal Thomas said they have been busy this week moving rooms around.
“We had to take the interventionists and make them share a room, Special Ed. went out to Art, Art came to where Speech was, Music moved to the Special Ed. room. The Music room is being used now as a Kindergarten classroom, and when we moved out the interventionists and reading recovery teachers, it opened a room in the Second grade hallway that will also be used now as a Kindergarten room.”
Sarah Hilton was hired by the Monticello School Board to fill one of the two needed positions in the Kindergarten, and one more teacher will be hired before school begins.
