McGregors Honored as Farm Family of the Year

Since 1994, the Mike McGregor family has raised cattle. Just more than a decade ago, the family added a turnkey fertilizer operation, servicing some 50,000 farmers in the Delta. For those reasons, and others, the McGregors have been selected as the 2017 Drew County Farm Family of the Year.
As the Arkansas Farm Family of the Year program celebrates its 70th anniversary, the Drew County honorees join other families across The Natural State vying for eight district Farm Family awards and, in July, recognition as the Farm Family of the Year in Arkansas.
“We’re very honored to have been selected,” said Mike McGregor, husband of Shelly and father to Whitney, Madison, Mikayla and McLauren. “We’re just down-to-earth folks, putting God, our country and family first. This honor has humbled all of us.”
McGregor said the family maintains a cow-calf operation of around 300 head of “mama cows,” as well as selling steers and replacement heifers on some 800 acres of ranch land in Drew County. That is but one part of “McGregor’s Rocking M,” however.
The busiest part of the farm—as if taking care of cattle does not keep him hopping—McGregor said, is the fertilizer enterprise. McGregor, a former professor at the University of Arkansas at Monticello, noted that operation is responsible for spreading chicken litter on farmland all over Drew County as well as neighboring counties.
And, if those two facets of his farm aren’t enough, McGregor said the family owns two farms in Kansas—where he spends roughly 75 days a year taking care of business there.
Any farm family in Arkansas is eligible to be named an Arkansas Farm Family—and Drew County has been a part of the selection process every year but two since 1981. The family may be an owner or tenant and may have income from sources other than agriculture.
