Mayor’s Report to City Council: Repairs Needed at City Hall, MEDC, MPD, MFD; Parks & Planning Comissions

January 26th, 2011 by

During the “Mayor’s Report” at the City Council meeting, Mayor Allen Maxwell told the council an architect and an engineer will be here Friday to determine what will have to be done to repair the City Hall, MEDC, Fire Dept. and Police Dept. structures.

Maxwell said his goal is to get it to where “this entire building doesn’t leak”.  He specifically mentioned the leaks and falling ceiling tiles in the police dept., which have pans and buckets scattered around to catch the water.  He described the drippings as “tobacco juice” that has accumulated over the years.

Maxwell also updated the council on his work assembling a new parks commission and planning commission, and asked voluteers to contact him.

He also outlined his recent meetings with city  dept. heards.

Isn’t funny how when the former mayor gave a tour to city council to show them the same thing, most seemed interested?

  2. robert farrish says:

it seems that we can find the funds to do the improvement to the city hall and the square but can not find theme to replace the stop lights on the square that we badly need be cause alot of these people around here do not know what a stop sign is for.

  3. Suggestion Man says:

This building does need to be renovated badly. As do most of the old buildings on and around the square. Some of them even need to be torn down.

However, if the building does get renovated, we should still consider building a new Fire Station. A renovation is a building improvement, not a location improvement or an expansion. But, if we could renovate the building, relocate the Fire Department to a better site, and then reallocate that space, it would work out better for all parties involved.

Robert, I agree that people in Monticello need to be more aware of their surroundings and obey the traffic laws, but I believe that reinstalling the traffic lights leads to other problems. How many times have we all seen 18-wheelers and log trucks heading into town that clipped the old west-bound light? We also, apparently, have issues with drunk drivers running into the poles, which leads to our current predicament. Rather than leave one faulty system (the stop signs) and return to a different faulty system (the stop lights), perhaps we should have our police force put more emphasis on writing citations for motorists who constantly break traffic laws. People should not have to take their life in their hands to eat a McDonald’s hamburger. One of my personal pet peeves is the overwhelming percentage of drivers who don’t use turn signals. Also, yellow lights do not mean “floor it.” The scary part is that this is also a big problem with some of the local truckers/loggers in town. We’ve all seen the big trucks that accelerate around Topp’s Pizza to try and beat the stop light. So, instead of sinking money into replacing the equipment that people don’t pay attention to anyway, we should tackle the problem at its source and start writing tickets to those individuals. We could then take that money and put it towards replacing the equipment which people are paying more attention to. Just a suggestion.

  4. just thinking says:

it’s kind of like the hospital….you can put paint on a a very old building and keep making repairs…but in the end – it is still a very old building

  5. D George says:

Little Rock PD has same problem with their detective building, mold, water, roof problems. They were hoping to fix for 1.5 million. Put out for bid and the lowest was in excess of 3 million. Still have mold, water, and roof problems. Folks, if you think the price is going to go down the longer you wait, I have a bridge I will sell you.
