Mainline Health Systems Inc. receives $1,500 grant from Arkansas Community Foundation

Mainline Health Systems Inc. (MHSI) recently received a $1,500 grant from the Giving Tree program through Arkansas Community Foundation. Giving Tree is Arkansas Community Foundation’s signature grant program. Giving Tree endowments are pooled charitable funds at the local and state levels that make annual grants through two competitive grant cycles. These funds support a variety of causes based on changing community needs.
The grant funds will be used to purchase food models. “The food models help us teach patients about portion control and gives patients an opportunity to do their own meal planning. We get to show people that when eating with diabetes, all foods fit,” said Jane Pelkki as she excitedly spoke about the matter. They will also purchase glucose wands that show how blood thickens as glucose gets further out of target ranges. Jane also stated, “a very high glucose level makes blood look like syrup. Thickened blood taxes the heart and makes it difficult to get blood into tiny blood vessels that go to eyes, ears, kidneys, and other body organs.” Jane is the Director of Health Education and is extremely passionate about diabetes education.
