Recently, Shirley Annette Benton, age 61, of Monticello was given a $25,000 bond by district Judge Bruce Anderson on charges of financial identity fraud and knowingly issuing worthless checks.
On June 13, law enforcement was contacted by a local bank and advised that one of their customers, Shirley Benton, had cashed two checks and deposited another one into an account. The checks were written on another account, with the suspects name at a nationally known bank.
One of the approximately $4000 checks was deposited, and two other of a similar amount were cashed. All came back nonsufficient funds.
Benton told MPD investigators that the checks were written on her fiancé‘s account. Adding that he is in the military in Spain, and that they have been engaged for two years, but had never met, except on Facebook.
