Lake Monticello Fails State Inspection

According to the report, the Lake Monticello “dam is in need of a significant amount of work.
The upstream slope has become densely vegetated; the growth on the downstream slope appears to have progressed over several seasons without attention; several areas of erosion, on both slopes, also appear to have gone unchecked; trees in the emergency spillway are becoming well established; the rip rap on the upstream slope continues to deteriorate; and finally, a portion of the crest appears to be settling. These issues have been discussed in letters and in person during the years that I have been inspecting the dam.”
In August of 2012, “in a meeting with city staff and a site visit, included discussion on these issues: vegetation on both slopes, the erosion of the upstream face in several places and the deterioration of the rip rap” (large stones and concrete).
The letter continued, “The maintenance requirements are too extensive to list individually. Instead. I will refer you to the FEMA publication that I have included which deals with the topic of vegetation on dams quite exhaustively. Repair of the slopes and design of the rip rap should be overeeen by a licensed professional engineer.”
City workers have spent the last month cutting trees, bush hogging, and making other needed repairs to the lake grounds, as seen in the second set of photos.

I wish they could drain it, or have a fish kill, and start over. The lake WAS such a great place to fish, but not anymore, unless you like carp.
And…. a restroom facility would be nice. Makes it hard to have any picnic or family fun when there is no public restroom.
Why not put a public bathroom out there?
There is also a need for public facilities. Providing a bathroom would greatly increase the use of the lake. Ever if it were portable bathrooms. Any time the lake is used more, the city of Monticello would benefit from increased sales tax revenues. I think they would pay for themselves.
I agree we need to drain the lake and start over. There is no telling what is in the bottom of that lake. I would like it more if we had it re cleaned,bathrooms and a better beach area for kids instead of them stepping on glass
Drain it. Kill the carp and white bass and start over. It sucks without hydrilla mats and grass.
Why don’t they put in camp sites.It would bring in more money for Monticello and the rental fees could be used for the up keep for the lake.People from Monticello spend money to camp at Cane Creek why not keep it here.Have things for Monticello like star city.They do a yearly event called the ghost roast.They charge a parking fee for people to go trick r treating at the camp,and people gladly pay it to have something to do.
