Wednesday Trial Summary Jury Convicts Woods of Kidnapping & Capital Murder

January 29th, 2016 by

courtroom jury boxJury Convicts Woods of Kidnapping & Capital Murder

The defendant, Jonathan Woods, charged with kidnapping and capital murder, took the witness stand, at 11:20, Wednesday morning.

Prior to Woods, that state rested their case, at 11 am, after testimony from a State Police Investigator and an expert from the state crime lab.

Woods described in good detail their activities that day, including a fight he had with “some Mexicans” earlier that day, going by his house to get the gun, and places they had stopped at.

He then told the court that Samantha Poole had broken his phone screen, and admitted that he had hit her in the face with his fist.

When his attorney asked, Woods said, “Watching the video brought it all back.” When asked if he was guilty, he answered, “by looking at the evidence.”

After lunch recess, prosecutor Thomas Deen started cross-examination of Jonathan Woods.

The main topic was when Wood’s memory returned, since reports say that he told them, “I don’t remember anything between dropping the girl off at school, and waking up, shot, in the hospital.”

Woods told the jury he did 5-6 lines of meth at 2 pm, that day, while driving to his Woodlawn residence.

After further questions, Woods said he hadn’t blacked out that day. But while watching the images from the store, he described those events as the “blackout section.”

Woods also commented, “I know what happened was wrong. I chose to take the drug, and am willing to take responsibility.”

Woods then denied that he had “kidnapped” the victim, since he felt kidnapping meant taking “somebody somewhere.” Deen quickly responded that he had tried, but been stopped by police.

Around 1:30, Jonathan Woods stepped down from the stand, and the defense rested.

After the attorney’s closing statements,  jury went into deliberation after 3 pm, and returned at 4 pm, with guilty verdicts on both the Kidnapping and Capital Murder Charges.

The sentencing phase will be held in the morning.
