Youths Charged for Criminal Mischief at Sports Complex

June 14th, 2012 by

Drew County Sheriff’s deputies, Monticello Police, and an Arkansas State Trooper responded to the report of several trucks “cutting donuts” at the Monticello Sports Complex, around 9:30, Tuesday night.

When officers arrived, 3 juveniles were parked on a parking lot, watching 3 other vehicles driven by juveniles “cutting donuts” on the parking area and in a grass field.

Officers had the youths call their parents, who then had to come to the Sports Complex, where their teenagers were released into the custody of their parents, and informed of the events by the officers.

The youths who were witnessing the damage were released to their parents, while the three drivers were cited for criminal mischief and given a day to appear in court.

50 Responses to “Youths Charged for Criminal Mischief at Sports Complex”

  1. Uncle Bob says:

I would be willing to bet that these same kids are the ones rutting up and doing dounuts on Monticello School property around the pond.

  2. Wilmar says:

I sure would have hated to have to call my mom..

  3. Calm down says:

Tehy are just donuts. Tehy aren’t even on the field. I think the parents should have been called but CHARGES? REally? a little ridiculous.

  4. Concerned citizen says:

That’s why our town can’t have anything nice due to silly people like this! I hope they get a good fine for this!

  5. 60's kid says:

Most likely they are all regretting this and wondering why they ever did such a thing. I’ve had those moments. Hopefully, this will be a lesson learned and a deterent to anything worse. Maybe not being able to use those vehicles for a while will get the point across.

  6. Doug Knight says:

Our youth need something to do like, working in tomatoes, hauling hay, building fence, some type of physical work to get rid of all that energy!

  7. One of the "youths" says:

I wonder why joe burgess had nothing better to do at 10 oclock on a Tuesday night then to get nosy about some other people’s business, at least they werren’t out selling dope or getting drunk thank the lord almighty

  8. One of the youths says:

O wow they did absolutely no damage to anything except the grass? It is a good thing we weren’t smoking dope or getting drunk somewhere

  9. One of the youths says:

And don’t worry I work plenty in the hay fields

  10. Here we go again, says:

To “One of the Youth” obviously not enough or you would have been to tired to be out cutting donuts on city property!

  11. Arlene Russell says:

I think they should at least replace the grass and tend it until it grows back…

  12. really? says:

The last few posts are exactly what is wrong with the “youths” today. they destroy public property and don’t think they really did anything wrong. I say make them push mow the complex for the remainder of the summer.

  13. ArTravlR says:

I agree with Doug and my yard has been damaged too a couple of years ago. Takes a long time to have a nice yard & overnight ruined.

  14. Linda says:

There’s nothing for kids and teenagers to do around this town. This town needs to have more things for them to do. Build a skating rink, bring in chuck e cheese, a indoor park (gym). It’s too hot during the summer for the kids to be out.

  15. kennis says:

Let them mow and level or groom the field where they did the damage!

  16. Ya know says:

I heard once from some kids that threw rocks braking windows it was old and no one lives in it. My reply was do you own it? No. Than you have no right to tear it up. I see some kids that need to get out there and smooth out some dirt. Or hey the ones that don’t think it is a big deal give your address and let them come use your yard.

  17. John says:

Those young boys were just having a good time there is no need for charges. You can’t do anything these days

  18. Just saying says:

It doesn’t sound like they were sorry they did it. It is never right to do damage to somebodies elses property. I know kids get into mischief but I think they need to be taught respect for other peoples property, too. Would they do this to their parents yard?

  19. Nana says:

Who wants ruts all over the field? Let them tear up their own folks yards…Can tell by the comments from these fine young gentlemen that they haven’t learned a thing…smart mouth, defensive and whiney. Joe Burgess was doing his job as a reporter, covering stories about kids out acting like fools when they should have been at home instead of destroying the public landscape. And kudos to the boys that they weren’t drinking, doping…and praise God that they weren’t committing robbery, murder or any other major offense. If they work in the hay fields, it’s not enough to tire them out. Plus, gas must be cheaper for them than it is for most folks. They used public property as a giant slip’n’slide for their vehicles, showing no respect for the property or the vehicles they were sliding around. Think I’ll go over and tear up my neighbor’s yard. Then I’ll get mad when I get caught…”Well, I could have been robbing a bank! Be glad I’m just tearing up your yard! Pout!” And why is everybody out here looking at me? Don’t yall have anything better to do than come out here to watch me tear up this property?…Well, idiots, don’t YOU have anything better to do than act a fool? Behold! 3 miracles…3 brainless wonders.

  20. @ One of the youths says:

Then maybe you and the other “youths” should cut donuts in the hay field, or your parents property and see how well they like it. Such hateful “youths”, I can’t wait til your day in court. See y’all there!

  21. Uncle Bob says:

To “One of the youths” Apparently you have never had to mow the grass where some idiots have “only done damage to the grass.” It is time consuming and tears up equipment. Would you have done that to your parents yard? I didn’t think so.

  22. A friend of the fined youth says:

My friends were having fun, ok? You can’t tell me that y’all never did no wrong! You’ve gotta be kidding me. All three of the guys that did that have jobs! They’re good guys! Just because they make one mistake an y’all are gonna jump them and run em down! SMALL TOWN PEOPLE. Gotta love it! Well I can tell ya one thing it was grass that got messed up. Not like it was a million dollar something. Give them a rake and shovel and make em fix it! Don’t cause a big show and give them tickets. We was playing softball out there having fun, not smoking dope or drinking! Playing softball, I promise all of y’all didn’t know that! We had a good time played till dark then my friends just kept having to much fun!

  23. beingmyself says:

Charge them now! Or they will be charged later for something really worse than this!

  24. Brad says:

Everybody has cut a donut when they were young. My buddy cut some at school one time, the police found out about it. His dad asked them not to press charges. He made him apologize to the teacher who’s building had mud on it in front of the whole class. Made him pay for the top soil and grass seed. Made take out the ruts with a shovel take and wheel borrow. Not in the morning mind you in the heat of the day. That was 14 years ago and to this day he has never cut another donut on his or anyone’s land. Kids where being kids don’t charge them, make them fix it with hard work.

  25. One of the youths says:

The story he has on here is wrong anyway it’s pretty sad when joe burgess beats some of the police to the scene and the reason were being “smart” is because it air like nobody else on here is perfect an if it was you in the situation you wouldn’t want someone talking crap about it after we already knew it was a mistake

  26. Joe Burgess says:

I went to the scene when I heard about it. There were 3 officers there, at that time. The last officer probably was farther away but came to the scene because of a report of 5-6 vehicles that were reportedly involved.

Please note, the damage photos were taken Wednesday morning. At 10 pm, no one could tell how much (or how little) damage was done to the parking lot, grass field, or even possibly the soccer fields.

  27. One of the youths says:

And by the way we are goin out there Saturday morning with rakes and shovels to fix it so we do care and we do take responsibility for ourselves

  28. Unbelievable says:

Wow, charges for doughnuts. Should have just called patents. If that’s the worst thing my child ever does, I’ve got it made.

  29. Calm down says:

It doesn’t look like it was a yard. It looks like it was gravel. Pretty harmless if you ask me. And btw, I don’t know anyone involved. I just think that sometimes a good talking to does better than charges. It breeds contempt for law inforcement. They don’t choose battles anymore they just charge people even if it’s ridiculous.

  30. Festus Haggerty says:

    BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND….
MONTICELLO MUD TRACK & DEMOLITION DERBY.
COME ON OUT TO THE SPORTS COMPLEX, & PICK YOUR OWN SPOT!

  31. wilmar LADY says:

At the end of the day those kids were WRONG!!!! You do not tear up others property because you wanted to have fun or conti to have fun as it was put by the friend. Why didn’t you guys go to the hay fields that you work in & do donuts, kill the hay.

  32. for real? says:

OMG! the kids screwed up, they got caught. they should take the punishment and ridiclule and just be quiet. Don’t do the crime if you don’t want to do the time. quit being a bunch of whinny little cry babies! man up and learn from your mistakes. I did stupid stuff when I was a kid. I got caught and got in trouble. I didn’t blame the adults for my mistakes. I took my punishment and thought about it the next time I wanted to do something stupid.

  33. Conservative voter says:

The court should throw the book at these youth! Maybe then others will think twice about destroying anyone’s property. Want to cut donuts? Buy a dirt track race car. Or buy your own land and do it there.

  34. nancy says:

The bottom line in this is “no respect”. We did some things when we were young but never got arrested or in trouble for messing up someone else’s property. Respect is not taught anymore! “We were just having fun!”, Well go have fun in your own yard! There is always excuses, and people excusing them saying “their just having a little fun.” What happens next time if someone accidently gets hurt just having fun? Then it will be a different story. Respect and manners need to be taught again in today’s society!

  35. One of the youths says:

Hey people were not “complaining” when OUR BUSINESS gets put on frikin Monticello live it kinda p-=-=s us off we understand that we shouldn’t have done it and we will fix it and we apologize for it and are taking RESPOSIBLITLITY for our actions by doing it

  36. Disgusted says:

I think the point that “one of the youths” is missing is not so much the
damage to public property but your apparent lack of remorse and
respect. Trying to verbally attack Joe Burgess who was just doing
his job shows your lack of respect for your elders. Yes most adults
have some stupid mistakes in their pasts, but we had to pay for
those and were actually sorry we did them after. It appears you
have no remorse for your actions and sounds to me like you could
benefit from a good ol’ fashioned butt whooping from your parents.

  37. Dirt Track Owner says:

To conservative voter: “buy a dirt track race car” That’s a great idea! I don’t know why we didn’t think of that earlier! But I can’t seem to find the dirt track aisle in Walmart.

  38. Common Sence says:

This is insane. Kids will be kids. Mistakes will be made. I truly believe no one in this conversation can say for themselves that they’ve never messed up in the name of fun. Lighten up guys, this is what being a “Youth” is about. You live & you learn. Give these kids a break.

  39. One of the youth in Monticello says:

This website isn’t anything but a GOSSIP center!
Where people sit at home and play on the computer and look at what other people did, then comment on it and say we have no respect.
I have respect. But I have no respect for people sitting at home talking about my friends and I! We all have jobs! We have stuff to do, and talking about us messing the grass up? I didn’t see any grass out there it looked like dirt and gravel to me. And put your opinions out here and youths with nothing to do, maybe you have nothing to do that’s why your at home or where ever you might be sitting on a computer talkin about OUR business and how bad we are!
A man once told me, son people talk about you and your business because they are jealous and insecur about themselves! Glad to know that were the talk of the town and everybody on here has nothing to do but talk about our faults in life! Well guess what were 17 years old! You live and LEARN. Well we learned from the mistake an we’re still learning!

  40. they need to pay says:

that grass may not seem a big deal to the youths involved but if they were made to pay for and lay the sod they destroyed they might feel a bit different… wonder how they and their parents would feel if a bunch of idiots done that in their yard?

  41. fed up says:

This is sad these kids need to pay for this. These kids are probally spoiled rich kids whos parents get them oit of everything. The youth today need to take responability of thier actions. Make them do comunite service in town take thier licsense away and pay a fine.

  42. One of the youths says:

Ok look I have respect for adults I was raised right but there’s only so much someone can take I mean would you want every person to know your business and to come on here and talk about how horrible we are I’m sorry if I seem rude because I’m really not trying to be I’m sorry if I offended you

  43. Sam Cooley says:

    To ONE OF THE YOUTHS:

    Here’s some free legal advice.

Everything you say here is going to end up in the hands of the prosecutor – and then in the hands of the judge. And they are going to see your whining and your bad attitude, and it’s not going to reflect well on you.

This is the time to be apologetic and humble. It’s not the time to cry because you got caught. You are not the victim. Monticello taxpayers are the victims.

When you break the law and cause damage to public property, you should expect to be subject to public scorn.

  44. woods says:

One of the youth- you have no respect because YOU AND YOUR friends cut donuts in a public area where people go to have fun. But its kids like you that keep us from having anything..boohoo you got to go and clean up what you tore up. If i done that at yoir age my parents would have tore my butt up. It is sad ungreatful kids with no respect.

  45. Brad says:

A man once told me if it don’t belong to you don’t touch it.

  46. 60's kid says:

I go along with ‘Common Sense’. Lighten up. I think they have learned their lesson. Everyone deserves a second chance. Do any of you have the right to throw stones. Bet you or one of your relatives have done worse. Those of you who have written such long responses, couldn’t you better use your time doing something ‘for the good of others’. Too much drama. I’m out of here.

  47. Nana says:

Oh, Lord, the boys are embarrassed! People “nosing into THEIR business..” Don’t people have anything better to do than staying on the computer? How funny…I can’t afford the gas to go out ripping up public property…And it’s ironic that they and their defenders get on the computer to denounce people who get on their computers to denouce vandals…No, these boys are not the first, nor are they the last who will be up to mischief. It’s not the end of the world…What amazes me is the aggressive attitude. “Quit talking about me! Quit looking at me! I could have been doing worse, you know! It was just grass, gravel, mud…whatever..” I suggest they realize that the more antagonistic they get, the less sympathy they will garner. People can understand and even sympathize with mischievous boys, up to a point. It’s a smart mouth, bad attitude and whining that REALLY gets on people’s nerves.

  48. rooks1 says:

Little advice to the youths involved or just standing by watchiing. Live an Learn an move on. Take your punishment even if you dont agree with your head held up, be respectful no matter how upset you are.. And learn to ignore.. that is the hardest, when your young but the more you add fuel to the fire the bigger that fire gets. I understand defending yourself or friends but ignoring is better. As for this being a small town yes it is but gossip an judging happen everywhere not just small towns.

  49. Joe Burgess says:

With this line of comments repeating itself, comments will be closed, with very limited exceptions.

  50. yodaddy says:

Playing softball after dark? I thought the fields could only be used for organizational activities? I have heard of people (dads with their kids, etc.) being told they cannot use the fields unless it is with the organization.
