February 21st, 2022 by Joe BurgessOn March 9, 2021, Stephen Thomas Jones, believed to be a native of California was arrested at a local business in Monticello, and charged with multiple counts of possession with intent to deliver narcotics, including heroin and meth. This is believed to be the first heroin arrest and conviction in Drew County in decades. (Records do not show there to have ever been one.)
An off-duty Drew county deputy was at a local business when he noticed a strong marijuana smell coming out of the vehicle. He notified a Monticello police officer, who arrived to conduct the investigation aNFL vehicle search.
A fist size amount of marijuana was sitting on the console of the car. The officer asked Jones where the other drugs were located, and he responded they were in the backpack in the backseat.
Friday, Jones accepted a plea bargain for eight years in ADC, with six years suspended. If he had been convicted of all charges and given the maximum sentence by jury, that would have added up to 58 total years in prison.
Jones admitted to having 15 grams of Methamphetamine, 7 grams of Heroin, Suboxone, Marijuana, and Drug Paraphernalia (syringes) in his vehicle.
